I attended a double feature the other night, a first for me, I live in relatively small city without any independent theater chains, so it's not common, as in it never ever happens.
Ever.
This has to be relatively uncommon based on the unimpressed look on the ticket takers face, when I fumbled with my two sets of tickets.
It doesn't matter if your the biggest, goddamn fan of movies ever, four plus hours is a long time to be stuck in a movie theater. Even training yourself by watching Peter Jackson movies cannot prepare your for this shit, it's intense to say the least. Your enjoyment will factor solely on the quality of the films your watching, they better be good, and if their not, they better be bad in the good way.
The Films in Question: Piranha (3D) and Inception, in that order.
I like to think in some alternate universe, my good friend, his girlfriend and I would've went to see the movies in reverse order, maybe I would've enjoyed the later less, maybe my brain would've been happier if I saw Inception second.
Piranha 3D isn't going to have a run at the oscars, it's not that kind of film, that was never the objective, unless there was a category with most tits on screen, or for funnest film. It has basically no artistic merit, vision or complex layered storyline (like inception), instead it opts for sex and blood and I loved it. Piranha incorporates the classically simple, yet effective horror story structure. You have a (sort of) likable, protagonist who is almost completely surrounded by a bunch of sexually attractive shallow assholes who eventually get their bloody come-up-ins. Props to the make up team, who made the water run red. These guys got really creative with how to kill people in this one, there are bodies getting ripped in half, with the guts falling out; legs getting chews off; faces getting ripped off and severed penises. Don't take your mom to see this one unless she's really cool.
Also I can say that I've gone to the pinnacle of 3D, and I have seen several pairs of breasts in 3D. They definitely nice, but I'm not rushing to get a 3D TV, which is a bad sign for this whole "gimmick". I predict, that It's not going to get better than this.
After the awesomeness that was Piranha, we killed time for the next picture by having some margaritas at a local bar and grill, served to us by some douche who couldn't stop looking at himself in the mirror.
2 Margaritas after, I regretted not seeing Piranha second.
But all of that really faded quickly after I became totally immersed in Inception. I'm not going to ruin this one for you, because I want you to see it in a completely fresh mind like I did. ( I realize that I was late on seeing this one, and you've probably already seen it or heard all about it) All I really have to say is that it is a very unconventional, daring in it's complexity/structure, must've been a bitch to edit and executed/realized very well. The special effects are really good and will make you wonder how they did it, extra props to the minimal use of CGI which I always love to see. Only Gripe I had with the whole thing was the winter scene which I thought was too far out of the tone of the movie and gave it a strange james bond feel.
There was a cold, god damned draft freezing my legs off, during this one and I was still captivated by it, which says a lot. Still, my inner geek cannot be denied the best things I definately saw tonight: Richard Dryfuss' cameo in Piranha and Christopher Lloyd saying crazy shit like " the piranha are more than 2 million years old!", i hope that this is his last movie. Way to go out with a bang.
2 quick side notes:
I think it's my mind fucking with me, but does anybody else think that Gordon Joseph-Hewitt resembles Heath Ledger quite a bit. I noticed a while ago, but I couldn't help but drawn the connection here, the kid has definately gotten a lot more work since Heath bit the bullet, and seeing as it's a Nolan movie, I wonder if Heath would've ended up getting cast in this movie instead of Hewitt ( who was arguably the best actor in this one)
Alternate Universes.
On the inevitable comparison: I was really relieved that Inception was NOT in 3D, my eyes thanked me. Piranha was cool, but the lamest things about it were definitely the made for 3D shots, you know the ones i'm talking about. History has a way of repeating itself, down with this gimmick.
Take care ladies and gentlemen.
Ever.

I can't wait to get that film on DVD so I can watch it over and over again - it is a great one.
