Sometimes, even though we love and respect someone intensely we, as individuals, will always have different tastes and desires. I think it's a measure of your intense affection for each other, and your commitment that you managed to pass this crisis.
However, if we find our tastes are divergent from our partners, it does make us feel guilty. I feel somewhat guilty about being a member of SG, because my wife finds any form of pornography completely degrading. And yet, I have made such good friends here, some of them SGs. So, the point is, the guilt is projected onto us from outside, from someone else's viewpoint. We feel guilty, not because we think it is wrong, but because someone else that we care about does. But then again, if we didn't care about them and respect their feelings, it wouldn't happen. It's a mark of our empathy, I guess.
Don't forget also, although there are a few years between us, that we would have both been brought up in a much more puritan environment than exists these days (I certainly was anyway!). Our parents attitudes do shape our own, even if we ultimately reject them. And they will have shaped Annette's too.
Again, it is a mark of the strength and depth of your love for each other that you got past the event, but also that you do harbour guilty feelings. Transform that guilt into a loving memory for a woman that gave you so much; accept and enjoy who you are now.

I think we are social animals, aren't we? We have this illusion that we can cope on our own, but we're not really designed that way. And the negotiation and compromise that are necessary to build successful relationships are what develops us into proper caring human beings. Alone, we are 'trapped in the prison of our own freedom'.

You know, I'm never quite sure why football/soccer hasn't caught on more in the US. But then, apart from Japan, there's no market outside of North America for baseball really. I know a lot of the Latin American clubs were initially set up by British emigrants, especially in Argentina and Uruguay. And they have strong links with the Italian and Spanish leagues too. It must be a fairly organic thing, I guess.
But there is also the issue of rivalries, which are quite fierce, especially between teams from the same cities. Perhaps because major league football is imposed from the top down in the US, by marketing men seeing an opportunity, it hasn't got that grassroots allegiance that it has in other countries, where it has always been a working class sport. We always joke about clubs like Manchester United that their fans would be lucky to locate Manchester on a map, because they are now a global brand.
Some rivalries are still very sectarian; Celtic and Rangers in Glasgow having catholic and protestant supporters respectively. And their songs are rarely about football. So clubs have always defined communities, in a way. Even their unofficial names - the Millers (Rotherham United - a reference to the steel mills), the Blades (Sheffield United - another steel reference), the Potters (Stoke City - centre of the pottery industry), the Hammers (West Ham United were originally Thames Ironworks) - conjure an idea of their communitye base. Hatters, Cobblers, Saddlers, Glovers - the list goes on. But it does indicate how tied it was to the industrial revolution.

The public transportation is pretty poor in general. The busses stop running by 10PM, but have a somewhat general diversity as far as in town routes. If you live on the outskirts as I do, the bus is not a preferred method of travel. For me having a vehicle is an absolute necessity, as I do a lot on the weekends with my son, as well as have to make a long commute to get him to school and home everyday. If it was just myself, I don't see it as being too much of an ordeal, just have to plan your travels out completely before commiting to a time frame.

I think there are a lot more important things to judge people on, don't you? As far as I'm concerned, it all adds to the wonderful mix of life.

Just a warning: RI is a beautiful state, but it's current unemployment rate is on par with Michigan's at close to 15 percent.

I totally agree with you about forces hell-bent on bringing Obama down at the expense of the country. It's really sad.
