I'm traveling across the continent with Lavonne this summer. Lucky, I know.
One of the best places we found was this path on the edge of the sea, in Pacific Rim National Park near Tofino. This photo is one of my favorites of the many that Lavonne has taken on our trip. Please see her journal for more wonderful images.

We're in Forest Lake, MN today, visiting good friends of mine. Friday, I think we'll be heading to Chicago - I'd like to go to the Art Institute there. After Chicago, we'll pass through Ohio and Toronto on our way to Montreal...
Looking forward to the continuing journey, perhaps we'll see you on the way.

I just turned 40! Lavonne treated me to my best birthday yet.

Restoring an old motorcycle will teach one patience. Finally, after years of false starts and the spending of way too much money, I have managed to turn these two busted and broken motorcycles

into this completely re-made 1972 CB750

It's my birthday present to myself, and sometime in early April, I will actually get to ride it.

Coming up, a summer-long road trip
Lavonne and I are leaving home in May, and heading to the Okanagan, Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island, Seattle, Portland and beyond.
I used to be a traveller, rarely living in one place for more than two years, and frequently hitchhiking, motorcycling or driving all over the west. I've lived in Australia and Taiwan, lived in school buses and old vans, even slept in parks or on rooftops the odd night.
I've been in Calgary, of all places, for about seven years now. Though I have a successful art practice here, and something approaching security, I'm thrilled by the idea of leaving it behind. Going back out on the road feels like going home. Having my companion with me, and seeing it all again through her eyes, makes it even sweeter.
Too much comfort, or predictability, can be death for an artist. Here's to seeing the world, to motorcycling in the mountains, to painting on the beach, to making and being with friends. Here's to life on the road!

Hey, my girl Lavonne renewed my membership today. It's been about six months since I've been on SG, and I actually started to miss it, so it's fun to be back. Here's what's up:
Painting continues to be my purpose and career. I had a show in yyc last fall which featured these paintings:

Record of Thousands of Movements, 48" x 48", 2010

The other project I'm working on is restoring a 1972 CB750 for my upcoming birthday. It used to look like this:

Lastly, the most important thing I do is hang out and talk and drink tea with this girl:

She's beautiful and brilliant. I'm lucky to have her. Maybe, go read her blog post and give her some love, if you haven't already. ![]()
One of the best photos on my iPhone. Malloreigh and her girl visited, and Lavonne shot Mal's new set at my painting studio.

oh yeah, I have a Tumblr

In a couple of days, my love and I will be here:

It is Ness Creek, in the boreal forest of northern Saskatchewan. There's a music festival there each summer, and it is the closest place to heaven that I know.

Mantra No. 1, First Fundamental, 32" x 48", '09
Malloreigh and her awesome girl came to visit, and they hung out with Lavonne and me at the studio. I believe some hot photographs may have been taken, but I tried to keep my eyes on the the paintings.
Summer has arrived in Calgary. Living is easy.
