Ode to my bicycle:
I consider this one of the best purchases I have ever made. A 1990 Diamondback, Apex. It has been with me to Hawaii, and gotten its tires dirty in several states (kinky bike talk). The newer bikes might be fancier and have lighter frames, but over countless rides she has never let me down yet.
I'm not a great rider or anything, and this isn't a top -of -the line bike. It is a decent enough bike though, and I'm lucky enough to live near some beautiful mountains and trails. Single track trails meandering through redwood forested hills. The ground wizzing by underneath you , your full concentration on the path ahead looking for a line to avoid obstacles at speed. Trails groomed so that your momentum takes you into turns, sometimes tight, sometimes long, banking sloped turns which your momentum whips you through. I love them as much as anything in this life. Huge ferns grottos. And madrone, and pine, bay and oak trees overhead. Other trails offer running into deer, the very occasional bobcat, and always hawks overhead (or are those buzzards confusing my labored breathing with a dying soon-to-be-meal?). Makes it much easier to get motivated to get out with such scenery. It has to be, becuase it takes quite a lot to pry me off the couch away from Warcraft addiction these days.
Unfortunately, for 10 orgasmic minutes of downhill, it usually requires a strenous climb of 90 minutes. Doesn't seem quite fair if you ask me. Today a buddy and I visited a park I had been ignoring for a long time, even though it is relatively nearby to me: Soquel Demonstration Forest. Boy have I been dumb. It rocked! All this time... Well I will be going back there again. It was just technical enough to be really thrilling. I hear one of the trails I did not ride today is a true black diamond, and people are occasionaly airlifted out of that one with bones protruding. I'm not THAT good by any stretch, but I will give it a go sometime ..just means I'll be carrying my bike quite a lot. The bike weighs a ton. Yay, excercise
Seriously, if all the hills in the world just went downhill all the time, that would be fine by me
