i ended up taking out my right nipple ring yesterday. after the jewelry was changed in it, it seemd to have moved a lot further down than before and it was putting stress on the bottom of the nipple. after a week, the bottom half of the nipple was growing significantly pinker/redder, so i decided to retire it.
i was worried that taking it out when it was still not a healed piercing would trap some unhealed gunk in it, but i kept them clean and it seemed to close up well. it's just a normal pink now with tiny dry bits where the holes used to be. it's still pretty sensitive, but not as noticable as when the ring was in.
the other one is still doing well, albeit a little crooked. i'm keeping it in for now, as there is nothing wrong with it and i kind of dig the asymetrical quality of it for now.
