From Facebook, my 20-20 List [20 Facts for 20 People].
1. When I was a baby, I was born with "wonky hips." From what I remember, I wore a brace to untwist my leg at the hip joint -- the idea of this reminds me of FDR and the Polio Era.
2. My father used to tell me that I used to run away from helicopters in the sky whenever I saw or heard them. He wondered who I was in a past life. The last time he mentioned it, I reasoned that I was Viet Cong in a past life.
3. I am driven by curiosity. I have an insatiable need to know things, all things: useless things, trivial things, important things, useful things, but most importantly, secret things. The more I know, the further along I feel.
4. I have a terrible memory for names, numbers or anecdotes. Thus, I will always lose an argument that isn't based in ideas. I can't remember what I was talking about five minutes ago, let alone five days! I do, however, remember nearly everything I've ever written or had written to me.
5. My tolerance and patience is fairly high. It used to be that it really wasn't. What changed? My sense of perspective. I am happier knowing a few things some would consider stark and depressing. Ask me someday.
6. I live my life with comparatively low expectations for everything outside my own mindspace. I like to think that I am disappointed far less and pleasantly surprised far more than your average person.
7. Yes, I'm okay with that. Caring less has actually made me happier. Figure that one out, do-gooders.
8. I am most self-conscious about my teeth. I feel that I am too old for braces (and wouldn't want to waste what little of my youth I have left on wearing them). If I'm smiling properly, it's because I'm truly happy -- not because I'm faking it.
9. I wish I did more with my "youth." And yes, it is too late for some things. See, I was a "late bloomer" for various reasons, and I find that I don't have a lot in common with people as a result. I was twenty-five when I first drank alcohol. My first kiss was about a year after that... these things are a great source of angst for me. As a result, I try to live without the regret of not trying. It's difficult at times, but I manage.
10. Intention matters more to me than result. Proving intention, however, is based on perceived motivation and evidence.
11. I love movies, probably way more than people think. Going to a movie theatre is about as close to regularly attending religious services as you're ever going to see from me. There's nothing like seeing a movie where 99% of the people in the packed theatre are there to see it, too.
12. Were I given real power, I can't guarantee that I'd be anything other than a tyrant.
13. I don't think about the future way most people think about the future. I think about collective futures, how things will look for an entire society, not what my life will look like... a trait that starr_light must find quite irksome.
14. I'm usually not listening. I treat most sound as background noise. I scan that noise for flags that alert my brain that I should be paying attention. If I'm actually listening to what you have to say, I really am interested.
15. I'm really private. Not necessarily on purpose, but I try to keep things to myself unless asked. If I ever elect to tell you things, it's because I value your friendship that highly.
16. I dress well because I don't want people to notice my different and generally unpopular ethnicity.
17. When I'm staring out a window silently, I'm not actually thinking about anything. At all.
18. If I'm making fun of you, it's because I like you. I wouldn't be talking to you if I didn't like you.
19. I don't read as much as I like any more. I find that I don't have the time when work and opportunities to spend time with friends are available options. My book by William Gibson will always be there, but [my close friends] aren't a stone's throw away anymore...
20. I respect broad and shallow knowledge over deep and narrow knowledge. I am a Jack, of course...
