Hey, sorry to everyone on my Friends' List for not saying hi for so long. Things have been craaazy!

The bad news? I have to go back to South Korea for 3 weeks...

The good news? I'm getting a new car when I get back. Apparently, my insurance adjustors figured it'd be easier to call the old one "totaled" as opposed to go through the...

I'm not surprised to hear that you fell victim to "cold stares" but it's good to hear that it wasn't more than that. Your response reinforces something a "world traveller" friend of mine told me last week over the phone from Sicily last week: "most people, wherever you go the world over, and good at heart but still prone to prejudice."
I have a lot of Turkish friends, none of which are in any way racist to Kurds or Americans or anyone. As well as I have a handful of Muslim friends, all of which very much agree that 911 was nothing less than horrendous and are openly disgusted by it.
I haven't been to too many different countries, much less third world countries. I've visited Haiti and Jamaica, but both cater to US citizens in a way. As in, you can go to Haiti and have a good time provided you have a credit card and aren't a total asshole. And most people speak English. But I think that being a visitor in a country like Korea, or say Bangladesh, would be a totally different experience.
I have family from Bangladesh and my father visited there not too long ago. He had an extremely difficult time getting by on his own, what with all of the cultural barriers, but said that most everyone he met was surprisingly friendly and as helpful as possible.
It's good to hear that Korea's youth are acttively involved. I suppose it would be hard not to with Kim around. There's got to be a quicker way to get him out of there besides waiting for him to croak.

Taking this out of the thread -

My point was NOT that our military is full of evildoers. Not at all. Only that we need to remember that war is serious business, that suffering is real. Too many of us, myself and our President included, have no real experience with this kind of horror. I only ask that we remember more than just 9/11. I hate to see 9/11 used as a rallying cry for justice or revenge, when both ideals are never achievable. Solutions can be found, but we need to act rationally. Yes, I believe that war can be fought rationally.

Yeah, I kind of got that impression. I seem to recall agreeing with you on several points before, and at least being able to understand your position other times. I really do appreciate that there is such a wide variety of viewpoints here on SG. It means that one has to really understand their own opinions and be ready and able to back them up with facts, and I think that's always good. To that end, I think it's unfortunate that dkmfc isn't around anymore. I actually liked him because even though we had vastly different opinions on things, his opinions were still backed by facts, he just had different priorities, which I can respect.

Thanks for joining the group. smile

Yes, I'm back--for the time being at least. Just in case anyone was interested, here is the somewhat abridged version of what was to have been a 40-day Odyssey, but was (due to bureaucratic incompetence) reduced to a three week whirlwind tour.

My return from Korea was rather uneventful, shitty flight aside. In all honesty, I should have dropped the extra $700 and flown back...

In about an hour or so, I'll be packing up my PC. I doubt I'll be able to check in for the next week or so, seeing as how I'll be covering about half the length of the planet on a USAF crate.

After that, my contact with all you beautiful people will be infrequent for about 40 incredible days and nights in Europe.

Need...

Well, I'm going to be attending my farewell party tonight.

Not sure what all is planned, but I hope there's not as much drinking involved as there has been in the past week (plus).

I have to say that I will miss Korea. I've made a lot of good friends here, I've gotten the opportunity to see a beautiful country, and I've been graced with...

And did I!

Though, there could have been more hookers. Say, about ... any.

Come what may, things are bound to be interesting, because I'll move to another bad neighborhood that might or might not get better... so more novel experiences with johns, hookers, drunks dealers and felons await.

Joy.

I'm the same way. But I tend to stay in the background anyway. I don't have problems socializing but am slow to interact with people until I get a handle on who they are and what they're about.

It was about time I updated the Journal, eh? It's been almost a month after all.

The past three weeks have been somewhat interesting--definitely more fun than their predecessors since, oh, December.

Some of the goings-on were standard fare; there were a lot of outings with friends, though this now involves more of going to live music shows and less of just drinking until curfew....

What news?

Well, last night I got to see a rather kick-ass show at a renovated club outside of base. The owner decided he had enough of owning a place that was getting run down and making no profits with the usual juice/lady companion scheme. So, he went ahead and had the place re-done, including a new stage, sound system, etc. He then contacted pretty...

Well, I guess it's time to update the old journal.

I was walking around work this past week, and I was kind of feeling... you know, ...blah. Like a half-empty baloon or something. Everyone that had arrived here around the same time I had was doing the same number as well. I guess we were all feeling the separation from home, getting close to that...
