so my joy from finally getting paid was initially tempered by tim's news that he wouldn't be able to make ministry, which meant that 1)there'd be no tim (duh) and 2)liana and i were now ride-less. after wracking my brain and asking around it became pretty apparent that chances were slim to nil of us making it. i even looked up train fares at one point (unlike the UK they're ridiculously expensive and probably would be 19 hours late because of a cow on the tracks). i had narrowed things down to two options: i was going to try to talk dave into driving up and take us to poughkeepsie...he actually might have done it except that'd be about ten million hours of driving for him, and when that failed i was going to try to borrow lynette's ve-hicle. so needless to say, i was a tad dejected monday afternoon.
but then, lo and behold, i return home for lunch on tuesday and tim has messaged me to inform me that his meeting was cancelled (prayer works, sometimes, even if you don't get along with the almighty) and we were a go for the show. so we went. and it was fucking amazing.
the revolting cocks were the special guest opener and they were just as good as i'd hoped. they even played a rock version of "attack ships on fire" which sounded...odd, to say the least. the bassist from hanzel und gretyl is touring for them, ironic since i say HuG open last time i went to ministry. ANYWAYS they played a whole bunch of songs and had three vocalists. during the cover of "do you think i'm sexy" they had girls get up on stage (understood by all to be 'revolting pussies'), and the one singer who may or may not have once been in front 242 put on a giant penis costume and hopped around, bumping into things. tim thought it was a sperm, claiming that he didn't see the urethra on top and believed that the tell-tale circumcision-watchamacallit was just shoddy dong construction. the man does not know his tallywackers. al jourgenson, it's worth noting, played lead guitar for the set, immediately before running vox for ministry. he is a GOD.
oh and there was this crazy burly metal man moshing around (for revco? puzzling) who at one point flipped this other dude over his back onto the floor, and it was kind of really cool.
so then ministry comes out...skulls on their entire stage set like always and some funky underlighting effects. they started with "fear (is big business)", probably for the sweet synth intro. al has tommy victor of prong on guitar these days, along with paul raven of killing joke fame on rhythm. oh and the dude from fear factory on synths and joey fucking jordison drumming, who still looks like a surprised 13 year old. joey actually messed up the tempo real bad during "great satan" and the guitarists were visibly pissed off as was al. some speculated it had something to do with the giant slug of crown royal he took upon taking up his seat behind the kit but it was pretty obviously the fault of his monitors...he straightened up and the rest of the show went fine. on a side note, apparently, ministry used to tour with two drummers way back in the day, and i'd be lying if i didn't kind of wish that was still the case.
so the set was pretty good, a few songs off rio grande blood, a few off houses of the mole, and then a bunch of old favorites including "thieves", "nwo" and "just one fix" which they totally didn't play last time i saw them and was a big fucking treat. they also played stigmata during one of the two encores, which was amazing because i'd just about given up hope of ever seeing that song played. they also played "so what". oh, and the show definately ended with "psalm 69", so i'm really glad tim was there to see it. and it also reminded me how they didn't play encores in 2004 because the sound system fucked up (i vaguely recall al reeming out one of the techs before hurling a guitar at him). luckily it held out this time.
so a good time had by all. i actually kind of hope i can find the revco shirt they were pedalling online somewhere, but no luck thusfar. tomorrow i'm going to see mindless self indulgence in rochester with sean and mcardle, and this weekend is peaches, bauhaus, and nine inch fucking nails at SPAC with spoulette and liana. mm, industrial music and pretty ladies, life is pretty good eh?
