I'm not feeling the will, lately, to update. The weather is pleasant and I'm so goddamn tired from work that all I want to do is spend time outside and/or sleep.

My summer plans are spiraling out of control. While I'm going to get the chance to meet many old friends (and some new friends face-to-face for the first time) the destinations are piling up while the amount of time given to visit those destinations is remaining constant. It looks like I will be in perpetual motion from May 30th until June 27th or 29th - I haven't figured that one out, yet. I will be primarily driving (w/ just a little bit of flying) from one end of this continent to the other - in all four cardinal directions. Yep, East-West AND North-South, baby. I figure I'm doing close to 10,000 miles in about a month. I'm very excited about this. My trips are giving me the opportunity to brush-up on an old hobby of mine - photojournalism. But the current price of $3/gal. for gasoline is seriously tempering my enthusiasm. Plus, with the advent of digital photography, print film isn't cheap anymore, either.

In other news I'm happy to report that The Folio Society's books can be found on Ebay for CHEAP. This makes me happy because 1) I ♥ Folio Society books so very much, 2) They're usually very expensive when they're new.

The low cost of these books means given enough time I might actually be able to get a reasonably complete historical collection going. And I don't mean "collection" in a Silence of the Lambs sort-of way, but collection in terms of having my own mini-library of high quality historical and classic books available when I feel like sitting down and reading for a while.

Ever write a letter with a REALLY nice pen? I mean a pen that costs upwards of $500? If you have then you know what I mean when I say it changes the fundamental aspect of the experience. That's about what it's like to read from a high-quality book. The experience is different than just reading from a paperback. It's so much more enjoyable and, well, civilized.

Or maybe I'm just a pretentious aristocrat at heart, I dunno....

Time for: FAVORITE STUDENT ANECDOTES OF THE WEEK!
====================================================

Overheard between (male) friends:
Student #1: "Why don't you leave A___ alone?"
Student #2: "Because he's my friend and he knows I'm only kidding."
Student #1: "A____, I don't know why you hang around with K____. What do you get out of it?"
Student #3: "Gay sex. Lots and lots of it."

A student said this to me after I questioned why he chose to read a very controversial poem in English class:
"It's because I'm a black, lesbian, feminist, socialist, poet, trapped in the body of a white, Jewish, male."

ME!
That's right, after watching "Super Troopers" for the 7 millionth time I decided to see how many times I could say the word "Meow" in class without arousing student suspicions. I got to SEVEN "meows" before the kids spoke up. I know it sounds stupid - but it was pretty fun at the time.

This is my favorite for this week:
During an informal study session, a student folded up a sheet of paper into an airplane and sailed it through the air towards me. When I looked at it, written in huge block letters on the wings was: "CLASSROOM CLICHE"

God, they sure do learn irony fast these days, huh?

I'm near SF. East Bay, actually. Let me know when you're coming through. One of my fave places in the world is right near Yosemite.
