Wow, first bar fight I have ever seen in Japan...
This society is pretty non-violent, quite a transition from the culture that gave us bushido, Pearl Harbor, extremely violent anime... but in reality, most Japanese people are loathe to fight.
Add alcohol to any equation and the rules change I guess.
Some friends and I were at a club in Sapporo last night and I fight broke out on the dance floor, I didn't see why. It was at first two people, but it quickly turned into a brawl. I was with 5 female friends, and one of their guy friends who I had never met before, and they were a little freaked. I can't sit idly by in situations like that... a.) there was no security to speak of, b.) no one outside of the people fighting where doing ANYTHING, c.) I used to work as a bouncer...
So, with the help of a little liquid courage and the fact that I have a good 7 or 8 inches in height on 99% of guys in Japan, I tried to break it up. First up, take the chair away from the guy trying to brain someone else, done. Next get between them and push them back and let the crowd work it's way toward the door. You'd think the staff would have done SOMETHING by now, but no. Once it got to the door, I got out of the way, and they happily kicked the shit out of each other in the stairwell, it was like watching a fight on the playground. It stopped after one guy started to bleed, some more shouting occured, then things settled down.
Considering no one got seriously hurt, it was kinda fun.
