Ah, set. I love, Love, LOVE being on set; I do not think there is a better, more enjoyable way to spend my time than by being on a film set. If you ever have the opportunity to crew on a short film you should really do it. Even if youre just a PA (an errand-runner) it can be great. Film people, or at least all the film people Ive ever worked with in Seattle, are a lot of fun; were all dorks and we just like to goof around and talk about movies and music.
This weekend was the first time I was on set in about two months and I cant believe how much I missed it. I love it so much that, despite the fact that mornings are my sworn enemy, I have absolutely no problem waking up at 4:30 in the morning to drive all the way across the lake into Seattle to work, which Im also not a big fan of. I got to work with Sean, who Ive worked with before, but only when we were both grips. This time he was the gaffer, and it was so great work with him in that capacity. Hes very experienced and very talented, plus hes a lot of fun. The whole crew was great, the foodehhh, Costco pizza sucks. But we ended on time both days, so good stuff there, and there was much creative rigging of lights to be had so that was good too. Thats one of the things I love about grip work, it involves creativity, its not just do this, do that, whatever.
One thing I love about being on set is napping. I always sleep on set during takes because theres nothing for a poor little grip like me to do except be quiet so as not to ruin a take. I have developed the ability to sleep through anything by doing this. This weekend we were shooting a concert scene (we were filming at a little bar/lounge venue). You know when the music is so loud that the snap of the snare makes your eye twitch every time? I actually feel asleep mid-twitch and got 20 mins in before I woke up again. The behind-the-scenes guy was kind enough to get it on film.
I had my first day of my thesis seminar today; ugg this is going to be a long quarter. I think there is actually going to be more writing about writing the paper than the actual paper itself. I specifically crafted my thesis for maximum laziness and this is really screwing it up. The Taoism class looks good though, I have a really good group of students again this quarter, and there are several different majors represented, so it should go really well.
I also just found out today thanks to the SG news boards that Tools new album comes out in 35 days and i am extreamly happy and anxious.
Everybodys fucked up, but nobody wants anybody else to think they are, but everybody knows they are anyway.
