Hello again.
hastur:
Finally more media is taking notice what many of you already know (even the New York Times has caught up a bit).

Here's a good article (with good links) from Ain't It Cool News:

Robert Anton Wilson Has Left His Body! Hail Eris!

Wavy Gravy once asked a Zen Roshi, "What happens after death?"
The Roshi replied, "I don't know."

Wavy protested, "But you're a Zen Master!"

"Yes," the Roshi admitted, "but I'm not a dead Zen Master."

Normally, I find it depressing to write obituary notices for the site, but Robert Anton Wilson was one of those guys who didn't see death as something to be depressed by, and I'd like to remember him the way he'd want to be remembered. He was days away from his 75th birthday when he "left his body," as his family puts it. It sounds like he was surrounded by people he loved, a great way to go.

He was a novelist, a philosopher, an anarchist, and deeply suspicious of every government or corporate interest. I consider his ILLUMINATUS! TRILOGY to be one of the great counterculture novels of all time, dense and brilliant and funny and scary. His work connected the dots on things that may well have never been related, but in doing so, he managed to not only lampoon conspiracy nuts but also illustrate just how terrifying the truth behind conspiracy theory can be.

I'm not sure how to explain the impact that Wilson had on me. Sure, it might help that I read his work for the first time when I was in college, but I love the way he reacted to the turbulent times around him in his art, and I love the sense of humor he retained right till the very end of his life. He was loved by millions of fans, and for good reason.

You can learn more about him here, here, or here, and if you haven't read his work, I advise you to pick up The Illuminatus Trilogy as a starting point. It's one hell of a read.

FNORD!!

Hmm, you are right... next time maybe I should keep a journal. Would you say that cider-type stuff is easier to start with than beer? I think I've made hard cider just by forgetting apple cider in the fridge for a few months...

I liked your comment in the Why Bush will be reelected thread. And we have the same exact birthday, though 5 years apart! We should be friends.

Why Socialism?
by Albert Einstein

This essay was originally published in the first issue of
Monthly Review (May 1949).

Is it advisable for one who is not an expert on economic and social issues to express views on the subject of socialism? I believe for a number of reasons that it is.

Let us first consider the question from the point of view of scientific...

"Prisons are built with stones of Law, Brothels with bricks of Religion."

The best literature is always timely, no? Blake was a wise, angry man.

"All Bibles or sacred codes have been the causes of the following Errors:
1. That Man has two real existing principles: Viz: a Body & a Soul.
2. That Energy, call'd Evil, is alone from the Body; & that Reason, call'd Good, is alone from the Soul.
3. That God will torment Man in Eternity for following his Energies.
But the following Contraries to these are True:
1. Man has no Body distinct from his Soul; for that call'd Body is a portion of Soul discern'd by the five Senses, the chief inlets of Soul in this age.
2. Energy is the only life, and is from the Body; and Reason is the bound or outward circumference of Energy.
3. Energy is Eternal Delight."

It's pretty stunning stuff...

I'd love to comment on einstein on socialism, but I think I'm going to have to print out a hard copy in order to read all that.

actually if you watch the old tapes from the military and the atomic bomb tests, there is a moment when einstein is saying: "all of our beautiful science, look what they did with all of our beautiful science". it was one of the saddest vocal inflexions i've ever heard.
