Lately so many people have been asking me why I'm a vegan. It's hard to explain. They ask questions like:
Why did you become a VAY-GIN?? What do you eat?? So you only eat salad?? How can you do that?? How can you give up cheese?? How can you not eat hamburgers??
Simple.
I live in America.
There is absolutely no verifiable reason to indulge in an omnivorous diet. Previous hominids and humans engaged in carnivorous diets, hunting and gathering, and pastoral-based diets. This means they farmed animals for food for survival, hunted animals for food for survival, and simply sought out sustenance as a means of living.
We do not live in a pastoral, nor a nomadic, hunting and gathering society. We are an industrial society. We are interdependent. We create. We destroy. We make or import all necessary materials to keep our society thriving. We make cars, we build skyscrapers, we invent, we are second only to Japan in technology. There is absolutely no need to WASTE invaluable water and natural resources, vast plots of land, human labor, etc, to obtain chunks of toxic-sterol polluted "food". There is no need to eat animals. There is no need to use milk, eggs, animal derived ANYTHING. With the way American industry is at the present, we can create substitutes for EVERY animal based product we have grown accustomed to. Want milk? There's soy. Cheese? soy cheese.Want meat?? There is seitan and tofu in every form possible. Ice cream? there is soy. Yogurt? there is soy. Eggs? mix 1 tablespoon flour with 1 tablespoon water and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and you've got a substitute in baking. Taste is an illusion. If you say you can't give up hamburgers-- I pity you. It is a taste. It is a feeling. It is a fleeting feeling.
It is, in reality, coagulated, additive-added, machine-made, dead, decaying animal parts molded, seasoned and shaped in the least possible recognizable animal shaped form to be grilled, mass produced and sandwiched between even more calorie and cholesterol laden products..... cheese- curdled cow puss.. processed of course. Ran through miles of machinery, but of course not before adding chemicals to whiten the liquid to a perfectly acceptable white, nothing like the pinkish off white it is. Pink of course because the poor cows have metal clamped to their nipples all day, constantly squeezing and often INFECTING the very udder the milk comes from. With infection there is of course an abrasion, blood, and cross contamination of body fluids into a seemingly healthy "pasteurized, homogenized" product. Not to mention that if you consume milk, you are supporting the veal industry. Veal is the flesh of a baby cow. It is a very tender meat, of course the only way to produce that is to keep the animal immobile as to discourage growth of ANY muscle whatsoever, the animals are unable to walk, kept in a cage exactly their size for the couple months of their lives, and then hung upside down, throats slit, bled to death, and sometimes, still alive, plunged into scalding water. Why does dairy support the veal industry?? Let's see. Why do humans produce milk from their breasts? Because they are pregnant. To produce milk, the cows must become pregnant. They are given mass amounts of hormones to keep the milk flowing and to be able to be constantly impregnated (artifical insemination anyone??) What happens to the dairy cow's calves?? They are ripped from their mothers and put in cells. to die. Are you a "vegetarian who eats chicken sometimes?" . I've heard that so often, when people find out I'm vegan, they say they're a "vegetarian who eats fish, or , a vegetarian who eats chicken". If you eat chicken, you are supporting the most abusive method of animal farming. They are kept in cages, in the dark, in huge warehouses with millions of other chickens. They are cramped so they can barely move. They are fed hormones to increase rapid growth, often so rapid they don't build up their leg muscles along with the rest of their body and they are unable to walk. They are thrown into trucks and hauled off to be slaughtered, clamped upside down and dumped into boiling water while still alive. Many of them do not die from the initial boiling water dunk.... so they go through the slaughtering process while still conscious,
all so you can have your chicken" nugget" . What part is the nugget anyways? What is a slim jim? Ever read the ingredients?? The first is "mechanically separated chicken parts". Which part could that be? the beak? the neck? the eyeballs? the claws?
The point is, meat is dead food. You are a living person, therefore you must eat living food. Put a baby in a crib with an apple and a rabbit. If he eats the rabbit and plays with the apple I owe you a million dollars.
We are by nature, vegans. Our closest relative, the ape, has a vegan diet, except for the insects they eat while picking them out of eachother's hair. The insects are a naturally occuring protein source they have, and are very simple creatures. I'm not all too against the consumption of seafood or insects for that matter. I have no problem with honey. Many vegans won't eat honey. I have no problem with people eating seafood, especially if it is a cultural thing (i,e. in Japanese culture they eat sushi and in many Asian countries the fishing industry is a major part of their economy) . In simpler cultures ( non industrial societies) I don't see a problem with the farming of animals and consumption of them. In America, we have no need for it for our survival.
Did you know that US.Beef is BANNED in Europe? the amount of hormones put in meat is unregulated by the FDA, because it is not a finished product, so the meat industry can put whatever the hell they want in your burger, in your milk, in your ice cream, yogurt, cheese, and are not required to tell you. These hormones are in fact, carcinogens once combined with meat and cooked and processed. The only way to not ingest these chemicals is to buy organic, free range meat.
About organic, this means that the product has not been exposed to any pesticides or additional chemicals. Free range means the livestock has access to outdoors to roam and are not kept in pens. This only means they have ACCESS, it doesn't mean they actually get to roam free. The whole labeling system is misleading. When the consumer reads "free range" they picture a cow roaming free in an open field, much like you see on private farms in the country. This is not always the case. If you are 100 percent steadfast on consuming animal products, atleast make sure they are organic and free range. I don't expect the entire world to convert to veganism, that is unrealistic, I just want to open their eyes.
In addition to the blatant gluttony America exhibits through needless slaughter of animals, we are also gluttons of energy. At present, we are fighting a war against the ancient civilization of Iran over foreign oil exports, which we of course, use to heat our homes, run our vehicles, and basically, power our world. Oil is the most efficient conductor of energy, but there are a vast amount of alternative energy sources that do not pollute the environment we could use. By abstaining from animal products, you (one person out of 6 billion) are making a difference. You are creating a deficit in demand for these products, thus, less production (the average american eats 60 pounds of dead cow or cow-derived products) a year. Less production of these products equals less animals that need to be farmed, and killed. Less animals means less water and food to raise them, less trucks to transport them to the slaughterhouse, less workers to pay, less energy to produce the product. I am trying to say that you are making a huge impact on the economy by choosing to abstain from animal products. The amount of energy used to produce one pound of vegetables is far less than the energy used to produce one pound of meat. Abstaining from animal products is the best thing you can do economically and environmentally.
This isn't meant to be an essay, this isn't meant to change your mind, it's meant to open your eyes. The government wants us to be ignorant.

Suicide Girls is punk. In British understanding and tradition, punk is mixing politics and social commentary together with sense of humour in a way that challenges preconceptions and makes people think, it's provoking without actually making a literal statement. As a model I wanted to draw attention at trash and paranoia behind fashion shoots. Secondly, I am fascinated by pro-ana movement and ridiculous passion with which girls attempt to lose weight. Thirdly, I have been affected by ED myself, it's a part of my character, id and hence sexuality, and I am not planning to censor any part of me just cause it might not be to everyone's squeamish tastes.
Seeing as Suicidegirls isn't Playboy, I don't feel obliged to always be "pretty and hot" in my SG photoshoots. SG showcases honest, unconventional sexuality. If slasher scars can be considered sexy, I don't see why eating disorder can't.
I am very proud of Candy Darling. And if it matters no, I don't actually puke pink, it was strawberry milkshake.
