this whole having my own laptop thing is pretty novel. i know it's probably old hat for a lot of people...but i always seem to be behind the curve on technology. the other night i actually realized how cool netflix's whole instant movie streaming business is. i sat around and watched tons of movies, just because i could.

i have also finally experienced the joy...

for some reason, i've been reading more poetry this week. a friend of mine sent me a link to this article, published in The Atlantic almost 20 years ago, but that I think still has some interesting things to say.

i have always found poetry difficult. that is to say, i've always wanted to be the sort of person that is into poetry, but...

I always made my self read poetry... so I haven't really read any that really spoke to me. I will fluff through my books and see if anything pops out.

Poetry is difficult. It's much more demanding than prose. I love poetry, but I can only read so much before I need a short story or novel to quiet my mind.

That's a great syllabus, and it has inspired me to read more poetry also. I would humbly recommend adding Elizabeth Bishop's Collected Poems to your list, because she is really amazing, and an important modern poet as well. She didn't write too many poems, so it's not as daunting as some of the other collections.

I've started the article but haven't had the chance to finish it yet. It's true that poetry lives is its own world of sorts, and poets do seem to be writing primarily for other poets. Hmm. I'll write more when I finish the article.

I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. The World as well as The American this weekend. I really liked Scott Pilgrim, it was highly entertaining. The video game generation has come of age. I liked The American too, though not as much. It was slow (which I like), but not incredibly thought-provoking or poignant...somewhat predictable really. Fortunately, I only paid for one movie, so I don't feel...

So I recently got my very own laptop. I guess that means there is no excuse for not updating this blog more frequently.

i don't update as often as i should because i just don't have a computer, and i am so particular about how i express myself that i often don't have the leisure to craft a post the way i like to because i usually only get to use the computer when i am at work or when i have to pay for time. so i...

enjoyed your insight about Foucault's analysis of Bentham's panopticon.

Actually reading your journal this time: INteresting... that I think of it, I've also never been drunk to the point of puking.

I'll have to give it a try some time.

last night, somehow, i got conned into working two shifts back-to-back. i work in a group home for people diagnosed with "mental illness". so i was there for twenty consecutive hours. it sounds unreasonable, but it actually was quite doable--though by 9 am (i worked from 1 pm to 9 am) i was ready to leave. it gave me a chance to finish reading The...

I'm ashamed to admit that I've never read Dorian Gray. I'm going to have to pick that up at my next bookstore trip.

I believe I've heard of this book before, I've just never given it a try. It definitely sounds worth the read, to say the least, so I'll have to look ip up next time I'm in a bookstore (which will hopefully be soon).

in school i studied psychology. i went to a buddhist school, so i sort of studied buddhism and psychology. in my own time, i study, well...i guess you could say i study people. i pursue whatever strikes my fancy. lately that has included a ton of philosophy, psychoanalysis, literature, and a little poetry, anthropology, lingusitics, etc. you know, whatever.
