Math is delicious!
I finally got around to installing all the junk for my algebra class, only to discover that the first SIX assignments are due on the tenth! Gah! The first week of classes, and the instructor bombards us already! Oh well. I'll manage to get it all done somehow. But stop looking at me like that, because I already did some tonight, and I have had about enough of that nonsense for now.
I know that maths and I have not gotten along so well in the past, what with me being a dunce with numbers and all, but I think this internets course is just what I've been needing! Let me tell you why. The main reason is because I can sit in my room and do my assignments naked if I want to. Or if my parents start doing that thing where they keep coming in and out of my room, asking questions or trying to make inane conversation, I can be all "Do you mind? I'm trying to do my schoolwork!" I tried that already, and it worked like an absolute charm. Instant peace! But these things are pretty much applied to any online course. Here is why I love internet maths specifically:
- Each assignment has a link to the relevant textbook material, for easy access to reference while completing the work. The only drawback to this, is I am wondering why the hell I even bought the book in the first place.
- Each assignment also has a link to an example for each problem! This is fantastic, because it's much easier for me to see step-by-step how a certain kind of problem is worked, and apply it to getting the correct answer, than to read how to do it in the text.
- The program checks your answer for you before letting you move on to the next problem. So there is really no way you can submit an assignment full of wrong answers.
- I bought a new writing pad full of graphing paper. I love graphing paper! My work looks so nice and neat and tidy, with all the numbers and variables and whatnot all lined up so prettily, and with my little boxes drawn around the solutions in highlighter. Graphing paper and highlighters make maths fun!
God, I'm neurotic.
And the number one reason internets algebra is better than on-campus algebra? I won't be called upon to do any problems up at the board. Every time I would be assigned a problem to do up at the board in front of the class, I ended up with a problem I didn't understand, so I'd look like a complete dumbass. Well, no more!
My self esteem suffers enough as it is; the last thing I need is to feel like a total moron in front of a bunch of people I do not know. I mean, srsly. What kind of social outcast isn't good at math? All dorks/nerds/geeks are "supposed" to be good at maths and sciences. Right?
Anywho. Enough about that. I worked this evening. There was this one old lady hanging around the nurses' station at one of the facilities, and she had on these maroon Mary Jane style flats. I told her I like her shoes, and she told me "They're antiques!" They did look pretty old. They were all scuffed up. Then, she said "You're so little!" I think maybe if you're called 'little' by a little old lady, it must be true. Le sigh.
In other news, I need to write Grandad a letter. I was going to do that a while ago, but I kept getting caught up in other things, and forgetting. The other day, I got the teaset he sent me. Some of the pieces were broken on the way here, but it's Royal Albert, so my mom said we should be able to replace them easily. Apparently there's a shop around here someplace that replaces/repairs stuff like that, and Royal Albert is in abundance. We shall see. I hope the pieces can be replaced, though, because it's a really nice set, and it wouldn't be the same if it were incomplete. Especially since the sugar bowl is one of the broken pieces.
My train of thought derailed there for a second. The point I was trying to make is that I'm a horrible correspondent when it comes to non-electronic mail. I LOVE getting mail. And I like to write, but I'm terrible with deadlines.
In other OTHER news...the Hatshepsut exhibit at the Kimbell opened last weekend. I'm going to see it tomorrow, so be prepared for another blog about that.

(Oh yes, and that header up there is a quote from "Questionable Content," in case you did not know. QC is a webcomic. If you do not read it, I highly recommend that you start. It's pretty ace.

tex13:
I always hated math. In high school I always made C's in algebra, and geometry, but still managed to graduate as an honor student. So i guess that means not all nerds are good with math. In college I did better so maybe it was the teachers in high school or something just didn't click at the time. Now I am a staff accountant and work with numbers all day. Pretty weird job for someone who hates math.
