After 3 weeks ive finally completed my submission to the canon photo5 competition. Basically 1000 people get selected and al receive a box filled with 5 items or briefs as they refer to them. Within 3 weeks you need to submit photos relating to those briefs. This years 5 were as follows;
1) water dropper (macro photography) You have to use the water dropper to form droplets and take close up photos of it in a creative way
2) incense smoke (black and white) You have to use incense smoke to add atmosphere to a black and white photo
3) Bubble gum (portrait) You have to take a portrait and incorporate bubble gum into it
4) Confetti (movement and motion) You have to use confetti to show motion and movement
5) Interpretation of a sound. (sound is of something falling like in a cartoon) - interpret the sound and take a photo.
After many sleepless nights and a little help from my friends I've got my final shots and have entered them 1 day before the deadline. They are
1)
basic shot using water drops and a sqare format. The curve of the grass did it for me
2)
With everyone doing photos of the incense smoke and other cliche angles I decided to go with a more relaxed feel. So its a pic of me sleeping with the incense adding "warmth " to the shot and giving the feel of a dreamy state
3)
did this one on sunday with my friend. Once again cliche' blowing bubble portrait shots were all the rage so i went a different angle. I made flowers out of bubble tape and used a different take on what a traditional portrait should be. Hopefully it worked. Its a play on the concept of getting bubble gum in your hair
4)
this one i wanted feelings of happiness and joy tied in with the feeling and emotions associated with confetti. So my sister in law and I went down to the park and make it happen. An adult on the swing in a park with confetti showing the wind as she swings and the gentle breeze, I feel, really captured te essence of confetti ad happiness
5)
The sound of something falling was difficult i wont lie. My interpretation of it was of the world crashing or the natural world versus the manufactured world. The long tree roots struggling for water in a concrete well with the leaves reaching for the sun whilst the pipe takes it all for us. Its deep but i think its ok. The world falling apart at mans insatiable greed for resources is what im trying to show here. Does it work? im unsure
Anyway 1st of december the winners are announced and hopefully I will have good news. If not I had a lot of fun doing it and am looking forward to next years briefs.
Cheers
