a portrait (For Virginia Woolf)
The paintings a woman would choose, comfort
And anomaly, a merger of
Something keenly deserved and patiently
Deserted, additional, as if returning
To appropriate tiredness after walking
On a blank field of walls, which
If seen as distance would not be
Horizon, would not be suprising
When placing dead forevers around like windows.
(The portrait I would have chosen
Is something simply more broad,
A rare grouse in a thick vat
Of hope and courtesy, but what
Do I know now with my hairy feet
And a belly whose personality
Is to be alarm of maneuver in
A bed of stillness hoping not
To wake you as you weep...)

for Max Ernst
Some polish
The jeweled chamber.
Others rub
Soot on
Smooth, blue
Wall, some
Do both
And neither one
All at once...
