why viktor zhivov is amazing
he does this crazy complicated opening lecture in his wavering anglo-russian english. the discussion came down to analyzing why female figures giving birth in 18th century lapland embroidery have antlers...and it apparently has something to do with, or so the most common interpretation of the moment says, a story in the primary chronicle about fino-russians who believe that a cloud descends somewhere in the north and RAINS BABY SQUIRRELS. another cloud descends and rains baby deer. there's a cave painting/rock painting of women and baby deers raining from the clouds...so that adds an interesting spin on it because then it appears that the women birth the baby deers. baby deers=fooooooood for laplanders and therefore, these women birth their sustenance. but they're half-deer, so they have antlers. neehee!!
my face hurt from smiling at the mental image of a cloud raining baby squirrels. er. except for when i pictured the basic physics of this, of course: at what velocity does a baby squirrel hit the ground if it is rained out of a cloud x meters off of the ground. baby squirrels exit the cloud with a velocity of....
you get the picture. so not only does the cloud descend and rain baby squirrels, it rains baby squirrels who defy the laws of physics and scamper!
i love zhivov.
