Well, I'm going to be attending my farewell party tonight.

Not sure what all is planned, but I hope there's not as much drinking involved as there has been in the past week (plus).

I have to say that I will miss Korea. I've made a lot of good friends here, I've gotten the opportunity to see a beautiful country, and I've been graced with...

And did I!

Though, there could have been more hookers. Say, about ... any.

Come what may, things are bound to be interesting, because I'll move to another bad neighborhood that might or might not get better... so more novel experiences with johns, hookers, drunks dealers and felons await.

Joy.

You'll be able to sign up for your favorite team when "StarLance" comes out.

Go here and look down the left side of the screen for StarLancer info.

I'm the same way. But I tend to stay in the background anyway. I don't have problems socializing but am slow to interact with people until I get a handle on who they are and what they're about.

It was about time I updated the Journal, eh? It's been almost a month after all.

The past three weeks have been somewhat interesting--definitely more fun than their predecessors since, oh, December.

Some of the goings-on were standard fare; there were a lot of outings with friends, though this now involves more of going to live music shows and less of just drinking until curfew....

Phoebus, HOW can you be so healthy and sharp as much as you go out!? tongue Ah, you kill me! If I drank that much still, I'd be so out of it!
Hey, so where you going next? Greece for vacation, right, but what after that?

What news?

Well, last night I got to see a rather kick-ass show at a renovated club outside of base. The owner decided he had enough of owning a place that was getting run down and making no profits with the usual juice/lady companion scheme. So, he went ahead and had the place re-done, including a new stage, sound system, etc. He then contacted pretty...

Well, I guess it's time to update the old journal.

I was walking around work this past week, and I was kind of feeling... you know, ...blah. Like a half-empty baloon or something. Everyone that had arrived here around the same time I had was doing the same number as well. I guess we were all feeling the separation from home, getting close to that...

During the past 10 days or so, it's become apparent to me that I worked my ass off so much that I hardly have any more work to do on a day-to-day basis. I kind of hope that lasts for the rest of my tour (2.5 months and counting down) here... I'm growing fond of the idea of not working and getting paid for it....

Guys, I got news from my sources. Don't go out after curfew no matter how few GI's know about the area. The KNP now has the authority to hold GI's and contact the MPs. Basically if they here someone speaking english they will ask for your passport and visa. If you cant present it the KNP will take you in until the MPs show up. It's part of a new agreement between the US and Korea. Be careful everyone!
rotten03:
The passport thing is a good idea, but in Korea visitors must have their passport AND a visa that says how long they'll be in the country. Doesn't really matter since you forgot yours but I thought you might want to know just for your own knowledge.

Where to start?

I feel great, rejuvenated--in control of my life.

I finally got through what was my first inspection as (I guess we would call me...)a project manager (...in the civilian world), succesfully. I still hate paperwork and bureaucracy though, and none of the good things the inspectors had to say about my program or myself will ever change my mind about going back...

I don't know, Greek and Irish is pretty cool! But I do have the different continents, different hemispheres thing going! wink
I'd like to go during the Olympics but it's going to be chaos! I don't know, it really depends on my research. Some of my family lives in Athens, but they go to Lesvos for the summer. I have a friend who lives in Athens, so I may check it out. I think it'd be a pretty fun experience! We'll have to grab a drink if we're both there at the same time! biggrin
rotten03:
Funny that you say that. My buddies are playing in a bar here in Anjung-ri. I appreciate the offer though.

First, news for those who don't care about the Super Bowl.

My road trip this past weekend was sadly cancelled. Work overruled well-laid plans, and I found myself once more fighting the good fight against a giant named Bureaucracy. I don't know if I can deal with all this for another 11 days. Each 24 hour cycle that goes by is worse than the one...

Hey man,

I heard they're gonna outlaw lapdancing the stripclubs near US military bases in Korea. I can't imagine that being good for morale. wink

At any rate, not much in the way of news for me. Work continues to be insane, but they recently gave me a 20" flat panel monitor for all the time I put in over the "holidays" covering for other people. Of course, it sorta makes me feel like an abused wife who was just handed flowers...

...but these ARE really nice flowers, and it WAS so thoughtful, and... heh

I got off from work 3 hours ago, and I have to go back in 6. Paperwork is driving me insane. And not in that funny, good, healthy way, either.

Granted, I sold my soul to The Man, but in exchange I was supposed to get to do some exciting shit. I have now gone more than 8 months without getting to do anything neat...

I lived on Yongsan compound in Seoul from '69 - '71. (My father was Deputy Comptroller for 8th Army... I was born in '58). There is no doubt that the experience warped me for life: rampant corruption, political turmoil, incredible filth and disease, unbearable heat and humidity in the summer and bone-chilling cold in the winter. And in those days most of the country was terribly poor. About the only positive aspects were that I spent a LOT of time in the countryside hiking in the fall and spring.

Internet access would have been amazing. "Mash" (the movie) came out while we were there, and the Army banned it. But somehow it got challenged in the US Courts, and the ban was overturned. Boy the crowds on the base for the first showings were something else.

.......

Not much going on. I have veered away from the constant partying during the last two weeks, hitting the gym and the running track pretty profusely. Unfortunately, Friday was a Squadron night, so we all got together and indulged in tons of alcohol and unprofessional conduct. Which basically means I was just trying to recuperate yesterday.

I've got three months left in this place,...
