Ruby

hey guys

just wondering if there are any Ruby programmers lurking in here...

i've being doing web programming stuff for the last few years, but i mainly work with Microsoft stuff as my company is strictly an MS shop ( don't hurt me biggrin )

anyhow, i've started looking into Python …

philz:
my mate's got a bit of ruby info up here
reacher:
I've investigated Ruby, and don't see any substantial benefits (if any) over Python. Python has a more mature and more comprehensive standard library, and is documented better in English. Its performance is slightly better than Rubys. I'm not a Microsoft guy, but Python support for Windows is excellent. Since Python has been around longer, it has a greater following, and a more active community. More books have been published about Python. So, if you run into a problem, it will be easier to find a solution with Python.

Python remains one of my favorite languages for most programming tasks (from numerical analysis & climate modeling to web apps). It wouldn't hurt to look at both languages for well roundedness, but IMO you also won't go wrong by just jumping straight onto the Python train.

Python / Django?

Anyone here have any experience working on web apps with Python and any of its frameworks (Django, TurboGears, et al.)?

Wondering how it might compare with PHP, especially with regard to setting up the environment, ease of development, support, speed and performance, learning curve, development tools, etc. Any other things …

davex:
Sorry to revive the old thread, but Python is very flexible just like PHP and can easily be integrated. What type of web apps are you thinking of?

It's nearly impossible to get all the remaining Monty Python members together again. Graham Chapman passed away in 1989, and no matter how many retrospectives there are, you'd be hard pressed to find John Cleese, Michael...

Awesome, it's always nice to hear about the Pythons. Still the funniest men anywhere.

This is great!! I will always love Monty Python. I grew up on it.
My parents regard it as a classic and I shall carry on the tradition biggrin

Well, they added Burmese pythons, Rock pythons and Yellow Anacondas to the Lacey Act.

Killed that industry.

Probably the stupidest law outside of banning guns. Here comes more people to unemployment as breeders are forced to layoff their employees. frown

New threat to our way of life: giant pythons

Steve Rubenstein, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, February 21, 2008

In addition to everything else to worry about, now comes the Burmese python.

The giant snakes are slithering from Florida toward the Bay Area, very slowly to be sure, but inexorably. And they can strangle and eat an entire alligator.

The U.S. Geological Survey...

Drove 1.5 hours today to deliver my ball pythons to a friend. He is "snake sitting" them until I have room for them. (Only have room for the hogs in the new house.)
Somehow I doubt I will get back into ball pythons and I will end up selling them to him honestly.
The market is tanking HARD.
The only way to stay afloat in...

The Python Ban Bill didn't pass!!!!

If it had passed, it would have banned the import, export, and interstate travel of anything with the genus "python".
They're trying to prevent the spread of Burmese, rock and reticulated pythons in the South, but the ban would affect all the other pythons, such as my Ball pythons.
Basically...it would wreck the hobby/sale/trade.

But its ok...for now. They're...
