Any one who knows me knows that I am no fan of George Bush. But not even I would have predicted the collosal failure of leadership from this administration over the last few days in response to the hurricane. Let me be very clear ... I'm not blaming Bush for the hurricane. That is ridiculous. The hurricane was an act of God or the Flying Spagetti Monster or shifts in ocean temperature/air pressure combined with the Coriolis effect (your choice). However, disaster response is one of the most critical roles of the governement. Bush's statement that we never could have predicted this is complete and utter bullshit (see here). Mr. Bill even knew about it and he's a god-damned clay cartoon character for crying out loud. Funding was slashed for levee repair and redirected to Homeland Security and the war in Iraq. The director of FEMA is a Bush crony with no disaster relief experience. He's a fucking lawyer for fuck's sake. And only when things were decidedly horrific did Bush decide to cut his 5 week vacation 2 days short. But that didn't stop him from playing some guitar or eating cake on his way back.
But what has he done since getting back. How about jack shit? Just read/listen to the mayor of New Orleans here. Its fucking tragic. Anything that is being done at this point is too little too late. It never should have gotten to this point.
I'm so fucking sick to my stomach and I have never been more pissed at the administration than I am right now. This is quite possibly the most collosal failure of leadership in US history. People are dying. If we can drop food and water on Afghanistan, why the fuck can't we do it in New Orleans? Perhaps if they were rich and white Bush would care, but they aren't and he sure doesn't seem to give a shit. The man has no soul and is a pathetic excuse for a human being. And worse yet, he is completely clueless.
This whole episode just underscores how woefully unprepared we are for any sort of major catastrophe. Can anyone tell me just what the administration has been doing for the last 4 years since 9/11? I thought that was supposed to "change everything". Apparently it changed very little since we are no more prepared today to deal with a large scale catastrophe than we were on 9/10. Isn't this what the administration was supposed to be working on this whole time? What would happen if terrorists made a chemical or biological or a dirty bomb or, god forbid, a small nuclear attack in a major city? We are completely unprepared to deal with the fallout. Perhaps the Iraq adventure has distracted us from taking care of things at home (that's a rhetorical question, by the way).
I take no pleasure in pointing out the abysmal response of this administration or seeming them fail so badly. Go ahead and accuse me of bringing politics into this disaster. But its politics, George Bush's politics, that got us into this mess in the first place.
Short version: No one can stop/deflect a hurricane, but you can certainly minimise the damage and respond correctly.

I haven't heard anything else since that weekend though.
I don't think I can make it, but the Boston Derby Dames are supposed to be at the Punk Rock Flea Market this weekend. We've been trying to get into that gig for 3 years now, but I swear they set it up guerilla style because I never find out about it in time to book a table.
Thank you
