Beauty, women, sexuality.
If you note the subject line, that's rather broad and could potentially encompass a wider range of subjects/points than I have time to bring up or you have time to read. So I'm going to try to keep it personal and simple. If you feel like I leave out something major or you have a thought you'd like to share, by all means, comment.
Beauty is a funny thing. Society's definition of what is beautiful changes so often that I think the rest of us are all left spinning in some kind of twisted web of expectations we can never REALLY meet.
I've always (along with most other people on the planet, I'd imagine) admired Marilyn Monroe. She's got the perfect sex goddess look. She's curvy, gorgeous, and on top of it all - she has my outlook on life. Marilyn once said, "I don't mind being burdened with being glamorous and sexual. Beauty and femininity are ageless and can't be contrived, and glamour, although the manufacturers won't like this, cannot be manufactured. Not real glamour; it's based on femininity. We are all born sexual creatures, thank God, but it's a pity so many people despise and crush this natural gift. Art, real art, comes from it, everything."
Marilyn used sex in her art. She defined sex, she was sex, she wasn't burdened by it or threatened by it. She didn't try to deny natural impulses or hide her true self. She didn't want to be just a thing, though. She was a sex symbol, but she was also a real emotional person. And that is why I count her amongst one of my main role models - cliche as that may seem.
Through my art, I have tried to portray beauty, sexuality, intimacy, reality. I have tried to give life to what makes me who I am - all those tiny little puzzle pieces that make up my body and my soul. I want to make it perfectly clear how a person can be a sexual person and also be classically beautiful.
In Dan Savage's book, 'Skipping Towards Gomorrah', he quotes "When someone's dress (or lack thereof), actions, or words tempt others to sinful thoughts or deeds (or both), "[that is] what is called making one's self an 'occasion of sin', and there is potentially some guilt incurred by that." Many people would accuse me of being an 'occasion of sin' on a daily basis. My work brings up all kinds of frustrating emotions - lust, guilt, etc. You may look at my work and have a purely sexual reaction to it, and you may or may not feel guilty for that reaction. Whatever the case, I don't mind if my work turns you on. On one hand, that's the point.
But it goes beyond that as well. I am a real person. These thoughts are my own, these words come from my head, I'll respond to your questions with honest answers. I am not just pixels.
Please PLEASE don't treat me that way.
So, to close - everyone's definition of beauty is different. Mine might be more sexual (more nude) than yours. Beauty is nude, clothed, black, white, brunette, blonde, redhead, male, female, submissive, dominant, shy, bold, natural, augmented, in people, in nature, in architecture, in yourself. It is all over the map.
What do YOU find beautiful?
Go out and find something BEAUTIFUL. Take a picture. Capture that. That's yours, that's real, that's beautiful.
