what i did with my sunday april 20th:
my aunt was prepping the wood for the raised beds, cutting them down to size with her knew circular saw. i had just finished cleaning the hell out of the kitchen and was sitting on the screened in porch listening to my ipod and watching her. then i heard the saw come on for just a moment and she squeeled. well she does that a lot for reasons i may never know but this was a different sound.
i stood up and asked "are you okay?"
she started walking my way and into the house.
"no" she said in a very calm way.
she was clenching her left fist tightly and i walked over to her i asked her if she needed help, i think i asked to see it. she opened her hand just enough for me to see the blood, torn flesh and that she had cut through her nail on one of her fingers and into the nail bed. i grabbed a rag from the pantry for her to wrap her hand in and said.
"i'm going to drive you to the emergency room and you are going to tell me how to get there." i grabbed my keys and told her to get ready. at first she hemmed and hawed a bit about wether she needed to go in or not and then addmiting that she was feeling shock symptoms along with my insistance she started to get herself ready. she got her medical card and a book to read. i grabbed a book and filled two water bottles and grabbed my ipod. she called our housemate who was at esselon buying coffee and a muffin for me as well as a sandwitch for jade. she told her i was driving her to the er but not to worry and that we were going to stop by and pick up our food on the way. so i stopped at esselon and our housemate was standing by the road with two bags which she handed to me through the window over jade's lap. we assured Kara that it was nothing serious but that i was certain she needed to see a dr. then we left her there to ponder why jade and not i called about the food, and wether to worry or not.
eventually Kara went home and had the garden party while jade and i spent the day in the ER. we spent 3 hours in 3 different and progressively colder waiting rooms. the first in vinyle covered but well cushoined chairs with a tv bolted to the wall on the left side over the window ajoining a kids waiting room with identical chairs, only smaller in size. there was an underwater mural directly opposite me. it wasnt as good as on i would do but definatly done by a true artist, but perhaps an artist who was too rushed to spend the time on it that it requiered. i kept my ipod in as i read, ocassionaly helping jade with water or eating. eventually we were sent down a hall following red arrows that ironically said fast track on them, into waiting room number two where jade began to shiver uncontralably. i demanded a blanket from one of the nurses in the ajoining room, also our final waiting room.
in what i loosely call room number three, really just a bed with two chairs and a curtain providing the illusion of privacy. women came in and out with forms to be filled out, she was given a tetnus shot and eventually a dr. arrived. he took a look at her hand and said she would need stiches. so the prep began, of course this involved numbing the fingers first. that required several shots to the base of the finger which seemed to be very uncomfortable as jade was squeezing my hand quite tightly. after she was numb the fun part began. she had to lay on her side facing me to be in the right position for him to sew her up. i really wanted to watch the stiches going in but instead i held jades hand and told her stories to keep her mind off of what was happening behind her back. all i saw was the occasional peak of the curved needle with blue plastic thread appearing over her back as he put the stiches in. he gave her percacet for the pain.
after being released her fingers wrapped up like little mummies one fingernail slightly smaller than it started the day on one finger and a ring finger with a crown of five stiches (one stich for every decade she has been alive incidentally). we ran errands getting prescriptions filled and supplies for her fingers as well as food for me. i was starving. our day finally ended at 5pm when we came home to an empty house with cake, bread and cookies on the table. the remanants of the get together. as well as 3 get well cards written in crayon by little hands for jade.
so thats my weekends saga.
