I'm happy to talk Australian politics/economics on the boards, but no-one would be interested. And anyway, US fiscal policy is so through-the-looking-glass these days that it's far more fun.

Correct, it's not. And taking your what-do-I-care question a little seriously: apart from being a dork, the implications for international capital markets and interest rates could be pretty serious in a worst case scenario. That's the "self interest" reason for caring. Other than that, I'm just an outsider looking on going "Holy shit..."

Formal quals in economics. I've learned a bunch of other stuff along the way too -- enough to be opinionated in a few fields, and very quiet regarding others.

I kind of like the way one of our biggest national radio stations breaks from its schedule for 5 minutes at prime time to offer a series of words and numbers that only make sense to a few trawlermen and meterologists - but that's BBC Radio 4 for you - it hasn't really changed since the 1930's....
