This made me get out of bed this morning

A time for reflection

I have flown to Europe on 12/12/12 at 12pm…this would be considered bad luck/good luck or superstitious to many, so far the only thing I have found negative about this trip was the stiff neck from not being able to sleep properly on an airplane seat.

The build up to the trip was quite chaotic since work has been pretty hectic the last 4 weeks, I keep thinking that there might have been something important that I might have forgotten. Arriving in the Netherlands I still have that nagging feeling that there is that small thing I might have missed, and I can’t put my finger on it. It can’t be clean underwear, since that is pretty important and a lesson I have learned in a hard way with my Africa travels, try buying a pair of underpants on the street in Nigeria….quite a challenge I tell you. Time will tell I guess.

So I've taken my girlfriend along on this trip, she has never been out of the borders of SA so it is quite an experience for her, cultural and weather wise. I suppose if you are used to temperatures close to 35 degrees Celsius and suddenly arriving in Europe’s winter it must be quite a shock to your system. Anyway its been 2 days and she seems OK, another 20 days to go.

I have watched The Bang Bang club again, for those that don’t know it’s about four south African “conflict” photographers who gained fame and great respect covering the township violence prior to South Africa’s first democratic election. Very inspiring yet sad at the same time. Any case it made me reflect on allot of things, mainly on my photography. Not that I consider myself a great photographer or photojournalist, that is not the case, but mainly on the fact that I have really neglected my hobby this year. I never aspired to be a world famous photographer, and the reason why I take pictures is because I like the pictures I take, it’s not to impress other people, although other people taking notice and acknowledging it is a big bonus. Ok I admit, having people recognize and praise good photo’s is always pretty good. The point is I have gotten so caught up in my professional career that I have forgotten about that it is important to make a little time for yourself (a lot of bosses might disagree). In the end it is what keeps a person sane. Old story of “all work no play..” and all that. I plan on spending the rest of my holiday just seeing everything through a viewfinder, if that makes sense.

For now, season’s greetings, and if you are lucky enough to be on holiday already, enjoy it. 2012 was a big year, rest well for the next one. Enjoy the time with your families and friends, who knows, it might be the last time… if you believe the worlds going to end..

All the best for 2013

It’s been a while, nothing exciting has really happened to me since my last post.

I checked out the new Tings an Times in Garsfontein, I love the place, its one of my favorite places in Pretoria. It’s one of those places where you can sit down and have a nice meal and a quiet drink, very chilled, plus it’s not crawling with underage emo kids, or your typical Pretoria variety douche bag. I highly recommend checking it out.
I met one of my best friends there, since we haven’t seen each other in ages. We used to get up to all kinds of stuff when we were younger and it was a shame that we didn’t see each other that often since we both started working ect. He’s married now and on a very short leash, I suspect his wife isn’t very amped on the idea of the two of us hanging out too often since he tends to loosen up a little too much. She always gives him the “we always hang out with YOUR friends, we never do anything with OUR friends” speech. No exceptions that night and at around 10pm he got the “I think it’s better if you stay at TJ’s tonight” line. He must have realized the tone of her voice that the ice is starting to crack very quickly and quietly got into the passenger side of his car so that she could take him home. The look on his face reminded me of a puppy that just peed on the rug and knows that punishment is imminent.

I’m very thankful that I’m not dating a total bitch. My girlfriend is pretty awesome, I have a lot of freedom that other guys don’t have. I can go see out with friends without having to fill in a service request form 4 weeks prior to the night of going out. I suspect she’s a master of psychiatry, she knows that I know I have it to good to mess around with other women. I think the jealous types are the ones that know they will probably fuck around, therefore a feeling of paranoia kicks in that causes them to do everything in their power to stop the other person from going out without them. I think no matter how much you love someone, everyone needs to have their space to do things on their own from time to time.
I suspect that I have to travel to Vilanculos in Mozambique a few days from now, should be good, I have to break a site down, so it’s going to be like a paid holiday. Plus the extra dollars will help towards my Netherlands trip in October, must say I’m pretty damn excited.

Anyway, thanks for reading

Wow haven’t blogged for a while, life has been pretty busy the last while.

Put my CV out again, really think it’s time to move on, besides, who would really in their right minds choose to work for a guy with a mullet, it must be really sad still being stuck in the 80’s. well that and I would like to move away from VSAT’s and get involved more in GSM and mobile cellular networks technologies. Speaking of mullets, I’ve always been fascinated by the mullet, it never fails to bring a smile to my face. I still want to do a coffee table book on white trash culture in South Africa, seeing that it’s pretty damn common here (no pun intended).

I spoilt myself and bought a new pc, that really helps me being counter productive, I still feel guilty about splashing out that much cash, the feeling soon passes as soon as I start gaming. Fallout New Vegas really takes up a lot of my time now.

Decided to go back to university again, I thought I was gonna be really smart and just do a few short courses in project management and business management, now reality kicks in and I realize that I could have saved myself a lot of grief by just staying on a year longer to complete my degree. I’ll see what happens after I see a few people regarding employment opportunities.

Eat your veggies, before they eat you….
