I've been meaning to find something to write about for quite a while on here. In all honesty I wanted to write about something that could actually get a discussion going, and maybe start talking to some people with some similar interests to mine; and I think I found something.
I have noticed that a great deal of members on this site are music aficionados and have some great taste; which I can definitely appreciate. I wanted some people's thoughts on the state of music today, which I think is deteriorating more and more every day. I'm not one of those old fogeys who just hates on everything and anything that come's up; I just can't get that excited about anything coming out these days; and I think I know why.
First and foremost I want to give a shout-out to some artists who ARE making great music right now. First of all, if you're a fan of hip-hop, rap or can just appreciate a guy who can rip it; make sure you listen to Yelawolf. Yelawolf is an artist who grew up in rural Alabama and was signed by Eminem a few years back. This guy can absolutely rip it (as opposed to some of the pop rappers who seem to just talk over terrible music. Yelawolf has done collaborations with countless up and coming artists as well as some who are more well known (Busta Rhymes, Travis Barker, Kid Rock and his wife Fee Fee Dobson). Like his boss Eminem, he's got the goofy fun songs like this one here called Daddy's Lambo, as well as some others that really give light to what he had to go through growing up in a scary backwards redneck town. Here's a link to his video called Lets Roll Featuring Kid Rock
The next artist ive been listening to a lot is not for everyone; His name is Pokey Lafarge and his music sounds like it is right out of the 40s. I don't have much info on him but what I have heard is outstanding and hats off to him for putting in the time and writing something that literally no one else is doing! Link is also posted below.
As for the rest of music today, I am getting tired of and am struggling to find great artists putting out good tunes on a regular basis. Last summer I was in love with Country, Florida Georgia Line, Brad Paisley and others where my music of choice while I drove home on hot summer nights with the windows down. But now everything that I hear on "The Highway" and other music stations sounds rushed and crammed with computerized pop bullshit which to me completely goes against the warm natural sound that is supposed to come hand in hand with country music.
Pop Music I barely listen to; if I listen to it at all. I am not one of those guys who calls all pop crap, but for years now ever since torrents have become more popular; it is so clearly evident that labels have realized that they can no longer make money off of entire albums and so they rush songs out as fast as possible in order to be the catchy flavour of the month song that gets played 800 times a day. This is so they can hopefully get a tour done, where the artist simply plays a track of themselves and dances to it...
Regardless of genre every song now contains some sort of lame computerized beats or sounds. I know some DJs and artists do put a great deal of time into creating music this way but it simply does not do it for me like a natural sounding, pure instrument band or artist.
Maybe I'm getting old (although I'm only 26) or maybe I'm getting bitter, but for my listening pleasure I'm gonna pour myself a glass of whiskey over some ice; light a joint and listen to some Zeppelin on Vinyl, Some Garth Brooks Greatest Hits or put on my Enema of the State CD.
