Reading Skylight, I started crying.
The character of Tom had a 6 year affair. It all ended once his wife, Alice, found out. They stayed together, but as two seperate people, Alice happily accepting that he was right to have an affair with someone younger, prettier and more intelligent. Then, Alice got cancer, suffered for three years, then died. The bit that got me was this passage, when Tom is explaining one of the stories to his previous mistress, Kyra (the part that I am playing):
"While she was dying, every night I brought her these flowers. The very same flowers - red roses - that I'd given when we'd first met. Then one day she was lying, her head on the pillow, I thought asleep. She suddenly said, 'No. No more flowers.' I said, 'Why not?' She said, 'The flowers were for when you loved me. You and I were really in love.' She said, 'Now I don't want them.' She was one week from dying".
I put the book down and tears started flooding.
I moved my chair back and turned from the desk where the book lay.
I looked up and caught a glimspe of myself in the mirror.
I currently look like this:
