Foaming At The Mouth
Leaving Well Enough Alone
I can't be the only person who gets roaring mad when a website that I like and am very familiar with makes wholesale changes to their interface. And this actually had me pretty worked up even before I checked back into SG just now. IMDB.com changed their look earlier today, too, but not that drastically.
What really sent me over the edge was when Yahoo TV completely redid their listings, effectively destroying them. As recently as last Wednesday, I had Yahoo TV up on my computer constantly. I could not only look up what was on at any given moment, but I could look up the whole day's programming for a given channel, not just for today but for days into the future. This doesn't sound like much but it was a hell of a convenience for me.
You can guess what happened. They completely changed the pages around, and here's the gist of my complaint -- how come every time a website 'redesigns' itself, it gets more inconvenient? That staggers me. Yahoo has me seeing red approximately every six months when the revamp the front page, making me relearn where to look for everything. And every motherfucking time it is worse than it was before. How does this happen? Do they focus group to figure out all the useful aspects and replace them with fancy-in-theory-but-useless-in-practice bells and whistles? When they redid the TV listings, I couldn't so much as scroll down the page without it stalling and needing to reload. And I had to wade through three pages of glossy publicist crap just to get to it. They refused to tell me what was on TV but would give me rapturous detail about the ensemble of diseased douchebags on "Grey's Anatomy".
Oh was I ever pissed off.
Anyways, I found a different site to get my TV listings. And I'm not nearly as bent out of shape about the new SG redesign. But after ten minutes I've already found some bugs. For example, I've had to put in my HTML tags for bold and italics by hand because the 'Inserts' links no longer work. And God help you if you had a lengthy list of favorite movies, bands, etc. Those are all gonna have to go back in by hand (limit 10). Assuming you had the foresight to save a copy of your page (I did after the last time SG did one of these massive facelifts) or can remember all of what you put down.
Perhaps I'm getting old and set in my ways, but there is a very clear calculus at work:
NEW = SUCKS SHIT
My views may be extreme and inflexible but they are obviously correct.
