Smells like a diaper full of Indian food
I understand that SG is, generally speaking, not the community to go talking sports. Yes, there are sports fans, even amongst the punk rock girls, not just the guys who fancy them, and there are discussion groups to cater to us square pegs. But there's something, a feeling, that I must express: There's an almost indescriable frustration that comes from watching your favorite football team screw up time and again. A feeling of becoming more and more anxious at not being able to get the satisfaction you need, satisfaction that comes in the form of seeing a well-executed series or even just one good play. It's immaterial who you root for; I'm certain every football fan who really cares can feel it.
Tonight's agitation came courtesy of my favorite pro team, the Chicago Bears. Last year they were quite the Cinderella story, not expected to amount to much after the starting quarterback got injured before the season began. Then they rattled off an impressive series of wins and became known far and wide in pro football for their fearsome defense. Since football (pro or college) is my true love, and Big Ten college football doesn't start for a few more weeks, a pre-season Bears game tonight offered relief to my pent-up desires. I had every reason to expect at least a few flashes of greatness that would give me hope for the months to come.
And what did I get? A quarter-and-a-half of watching my team run around like they had their shoes tied together.
They couldn't run the ball, they couldn't throw the ball, and couldn't catch the ball. But no one expected the offense to be any good, the defense is where the team really shines, I told myself. The defense came out and played like someone fed them jimson weed before they left the locker room. Meanwhile, the 49ers ran the same bootleg-rollout pass play three times and got sizable gains twice. They were throwing the ball to wide open teammates and after every successful pass the 'Niners quarterback grinned like he'd found a fifty-dollar bill.
And I'm shouting at the TV screen: "Get to him! Tackle 'im, dammit" They never listen when I yell at the TV. I can't help it. I can't understand why the Bears running game has to scratch for every yard and the Niners are stumbling forward and getting six yards without hardly trying. It's drives me crazy, but I'll be back next week. No matter how mad I get, no matter how frustrating it is to watch, I keep coming back. That's because I'm a football fan.
P.S. Does anybody else notice how damn slow SG has been, not just today but lately? I tried to post this entry awhile ago and was lucky to copy it to Wordpad first. Otherwise I'd have lost twenty minutes work to yet another "Cannot Find Server" deadscreen. The evil pop-up ads on other sites move like ninjas on meth but SG has been like frozen molasses.
