I urge everyone to go read Cunt by Inga Muscio. Immediately.

The fact that she lives in Seattle made her words even more real to me. It's an incredible book. And I've had an incredible, woman-filled, happy, empowering day because of it. I hope I can bring that energy and positivity into the short week ahead.

I ran across this page in Fray that scared the fuck out of me. All it said was:

"Mel, Mel, you can't protect anyone. Haven't you learned that by now?"

Between the endless hours at my school, grad school, working at home, and the TFA office, that's what I thought I was trying to do.

But nope. I'm just here to teach. I hope I...

awwwww, where and what do you teach??

(and i love Joss Whedon aaaaagh)
kentclark:
That's one of the hazards of teaching--it attracts people who're inclined to give more than their fair share. (Along with a few other kinds of people, of course) It's a dangerous condition, Give-a-Shit-itis.

I'm really proud of my last LJ post, so this is mostly copied and pasted, with a few added details.

So I planned a trip to the public library with a few of my kids. I made the library sound like the coolest place on earth, and a bunch of them wanted to go. Since I never heard back from my assistant principal about it...

My night included:

    Wandering Chinatown
Waxing Nostalgic about Seattle and Taiwan
    Eight Treasure Sweet Rice
    Taro Porridge

Then:

    Mint hookah
    Morroccan beer
    Philosophical discussions about Barack Obama

IN-credible. I'm starting to like this town a lot.

gigondas:
Sounds like everything all the time. Tarp porridge sounds way yummy.

It's funny. I've been missing Seattle weather a lot. But of course when it actually rains today, all it does is reminds me I'm not there and makes me homesick. Irony, you are a bitch.

You're very brave in my opinion moving away from home. I can't go away for more than 5 days without getting homesick.
alzy:
It gets better, I promise.

If you ever want someone to see some sights with, museums, walk around the village, whatever, I'd be down. I can't get enough exploring the city. The first couple of months are rough, but in the end I think you'll love it smile

I've been hanging out with a lot of SGNY people lately. It has been fun. I never expected to really kick it with people I met on the internet, but being as how I did date a guy I met on CL, I guess I have no excuses. Plus they're cool.

Unfortunately my week off is over. I did jack shit. I also saw none...

I literally did not think I would make it through this program. I was on the verge of quitting and/or cutting myself every day. Now that I look back on it, I don't know why. Once I started thinking positively and working harder it all came together. Spending less time worrying and more time planning did it for me. I love my kids and I...

i am so busy and i have been working so much that i haven't even had time to be physically attracted to someone. seriously. i have never been at a point where i've been out at a bar, looking around, and thinking "no one here is cute because i don't have the energy to think that they are."

but the teaching is going all right,...
