Earthbound is the scariest game I have ever played. Maybe that's an exaggeration. But that game is scary!
I hear Shigesato Itoi based Pokey's dialogue during the final boss fight on his experience of accidentally walking into a porn cinema when he was a kid, during a rape scene.
The graphics are creepy to me, as is the music, both of which are throwbacks to first Mother game on the NES (or FDS?). I actually find the games on the pre-16-bit consoles to be super-creepy, surprisingly enough. Even Super Mario Bros., to a degree! Atari games? Forget about it! Totally creepy!
But the themes in Earthbound are pretty scary. The plot is that there is an entity that exists beyond time and space who is bent on the destruction of everything. That may not sound all that scary at first, because there are a lot of plots where someone's out to destroy everything, but we're talking about an entity. Who knows what this thing is. And it exists beyond time and space, which is a kind of a mind-bending concept for some video game-playing kid to wrap his head around.
The final sequence of the game, in particular, is rather terrifying.

I seriously gave myself a fright just writing that! This is supposedly a kids' game! Can you believe that?? It was not that successful when it was released here in the US, but now it has a cult following of dedicated fans. Just visit Starmen.net to see for yourself.

HOLY MOLY! Look what's going on at that site!
Hoo, boy. Too much excitement for one night, I tell you what. I think I'm going to rest for a while. Good grief!

Glad to hear you're back on track with school, even if things are rough. Got any plans for after graduation? I actually applied for a job at UofMD a while back. Drove my ass all the way up from NC for the interview, but they ended up doing an internal hire. Not sure I would have loved the job anyway, but I would've been nice to save the gas money.
I tried sudoku for the first time and thought of you. Boy do I suck at it.
