I watched a ridiculous movie last night that my housemate rented, called "The Power of One"... silly idea I had, watching this movie after reading the TLA Guide review which called it simplistice, racist and a dud.
Its basically about this white kid who grows up an orphan in South Africa and who because of his various experiences as motherless and being of British heritage, which apparently imparts upon one a sharp understanding of how it feels to be oppressed in South Africa, becomes this great leader of a whole lotta black people. Its so ridiculous I can't even explain. Suffice it to say that if you are going to make a film about apartheid, you at least gotta show ONE black literate political leader.
I found out afterwards that the director also directed the Karate Kid, and Rocky, I think. Also found out that, to my surprise, at the end of the movie my housemate callled it a good movie.
We got into a little argument about the politics of the film (I stuck to the single point above), whereby she turned around and went to her room without saying anything to me. Turns out I don't know when to just sit back and enjoy a good story...
OH, another thing, not entirely unrelated. My new favorite word is Weltschmertz

it was teh most offensive and disgusting thing i've ever seen in a public school.
i, of course, stormed out. but it's so crazy how little us white folk (as a base generalization) attempt to understand and commit to our past and how we are presently oppressing everyone around us. (be they single black mothers in harlem or a defenseless brown skinned populus in iraq)
ugh. it makes me want to vomit all over us.
