Are you into video games? Can you explain the fascination to me?
I've got questions.
1. Do you play video games? (If not, why not?)
2. What are your favorite kinds of games?
3. Name a couple of your favorite games, specifically, and what makes them awesome (if that's not a redundant question).
4. I know there are a lot of video game based movies (comics too) and I'm wondering how video game lovers find this? Do you go see the film interpretation of a video game you like? Do some video games have such specific stories that it is weird to see a movie stray from it? Do you imagine your characters to be a certain way (I know you have a visual of them) so that casting can make you crazy?
5. Do any of the video game based movies just take the characters and do a whole plot unrelated to the game?
(I do not play video games, as you can probably tell. I barely know how. I have, however, played Tony Hawk and Mario Tennis, and all the games at the arcades, but I'm just a spazz and I press all the buttons frantically and hope for the best).
Why this blog came about, not in any particular order:
1. I overheard two kids arguing about videogames so ferociously the other day, that I was rather shocked. "Wow," I thought. "Do people really get so involved?!" Then I remembered stories of people getting divorced or neglecting their children because of Legend of Zelda... Or whatever that's called...
2. I had been reading the Walking Dead comics awhile back. I haven't looked at one in about a year, admittedly. I'm curious about this. (I understand this is not a movie... and it's not a videogame)... Have you seen it? What do you think?
3. I was just reading the online version of the Montreal Mirror, and there's an article about Assassin's Creed. Ads for this game have completely taken over the world-- they're on TV every 10 seconds and in the metro stations too. I don't know about the video game, but I suspect the comic is awesome. I'm going to read it, you should too.
4. Frank Miller's graphic novel, Sin City, is a movie (duh). I used to have the whole series, but somehow just have #6 now (Booze, Broads, & Bullets-- one of my favorite titles). I liked the cinematic interpretation of this enough to watch it 3 times in the theater (I was working at an Indie Theater- it was free!) and I own it, too. I was looking at the print version last night, trying to avoid homework (I also looked at porn, read vampire erotica, started writing an absurd story about the astral plane, and texted until my thumbs hurt). I like this because it felt like a comic brought to life, not like Hollywood nonsense.
5. For some reason though, all this lead me to thinking about X-Men (and a little about The Dark Knight, which is obviously NOT X-Men. I had 2 major - idiotic - issues with that movie. 1: Christian Bale's face looked really uncomfortable when wearing the Batman mask, and I'm convinced he couldn't move his mouth properly. 2: Maggie Gyllenhaal in an ill-fitting dress at Harvey Dent's disastrous fundraiser)... wait, what am I talking about now...
I can't remember what I wanted to say about X-Men! And none of this has to do with videogames anymore. Blogfail!!!!!!!! Fuck! I wanted to say something about the movie versions of X-Men and I'm drawing a total fucking blank.
Anyway, whatever. Let's talk X-Men, general.
I was obsessed with X-Men as a kid. My dog is named Gambit I dressed up as Jubilee for Mardi Gras (which doesn't make any sense. I didn't really understand what Mardi Gras was, I was like 6, and my parents encouraged ... creativity!), I was Storm for Halloween (I practiced talking how she talked on the TV show for MONTHS.. HAHAHA), and I also was sure I had perfected Rogue's voice. My God. I had allllll the collectible trading cards, the action figures, and I still have a t-shirt from like 1992 (that was huge then, and is still a bit big) that I wear.
When I was 4 or 5 (and I could read EVERYTHING at this age), I fell down a hill and shredded my knee to bits. Gravel stuck in it, blood everywhere. My mom gave me a rag to bite, and the Phoenix Saga to distract me while she POURED BURNING LIQUIDDDDDDD (let's go with alcohol or iodine or something) into my big cut. Hahah.
SO! Tell me about video games.
And don't forget to give some love to Daughter of Neptune (please). You can also follow me on twitter, but I'm pretty boring, or check out my useless facebook page

YES.
2. What are your favorite kinds of games?
the violent kind! BUT I like to be able to control the situation I am in to a certain degree, I don't care for it as much when there's only ONE way to win the game, one path to take.
3. Name a couple of your favorite games, specifically, and what makes them awesome (if that's not a redundant question).
STAR WARS: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Hitman.
Not only is there various ways to play the game/actions to take, you can decide how "good" or "evil" you wish your character to be. So, you can put THOUGHT into it as well as enjoy the action.
I enjoy some more traditional D&D or action/shoot-em-up games like Brute Force, Dungeon Siege and Castlevania as well!
and I played Sonic the Hedgehog a couple times and liked it. And I like oldschool games like Pac-Man and Dig-Dug.
"Can you explain the fascination to me?"
YES. It's like watching a good movie, but YOU get to take PART IN IT!
". I had been reading the Walking Dead comics awhile back. I haven't looked at one in about a year"
GO PICK EM UP! it's still awesome!
I haven't seen the show.
"I liked the cinematic interpretation of this enough to watch it 3 times in the theater "
I didn't care for it. and seem to be the only one! It was EXACTLY like the story.. but I've ALREADY read the story! so what was the point? I'VE ALREADY SEEN IT!
"Gambit"
ughg! he's lame! Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Kitty, and Cyclops for me!
"Phoenix Saga"
CLASSIC.
2. What are your favorite kinds of games? I prefer games with open, expansive worlds to explore, so there is a sense of travel and adventure. Fallout 3 is one of the best, but others have included the Stalker series and even Baldur's Gate. So, I'm not limited to first person perspective in that sense (although I generally don't like third person over the shoulder perspective games - the Witcher being one exception). I've enjoyed some more linear games, like Half-Life 2, which to me plays at a pace comparable to watching a movie. Again, there is a good sense of movement and traveling, despite there only being one way from point A to point B. Another is the Witcher, which had some of the most challenging moral choices to make in any game I've played, and an interesting story and game world. I also enjoy some puzzle games, like Myst. Those usually have some really interesting and creative worlds to see. Regardless of the type, I like the game worlds, situations, and plots to be somewhat plausible, if not realistic. And occasionally, I'm in the mood for a driving game.
3. Name a couple of your favorite games, specifically, and what makes them awesome (if that's not a redundant question). see #2.
I hardly ever watch movies of any kind.
5. Do any of the video game based movies just take the characters and do a whole plot unrelated to the game? I wouldn't know.
