It's spring break and I'm up on Cape Cod enjoying some unseasonably warm weather, spending time with family, visiting all the usual marshes and swamps and beaches, drinking tons of coffee and reviewing some biochem and microbiology (frightening how much I've forgotten :/). And cooking all kinds of shellfish in delicious ways. Pretty much could happily stay here indefinitely, and have people come visit me for adventures. But, I'm also super excited about getting on a train to Ohio tomorrow, and doing some adventuring there!
Some photos!

Some photos!

Have gotten totally hooked on Instagram in 2012. It's pretty inspiring - there are so many creative, expressive people out there. Here's some randomness from my feed.

There's a thread in the iPhone group where you can find cool people to follow!

So, just alerted to this great edition of All Songs Considered, reviewing the best metal albums of 2011. This is why NPR is awesome:

Maybe now my friends will stop being confused when I blast the death and doom. Not likely though. Not that I give a fuck. There is some great music on this list though. Somehow had never listened to Tombs until now. And the new Witch Mountain is pretty sick.
Incidentally, saw Mastodon recently, always one of my favorite metal bands - great show, with Red Fang (love them) and Dillinger Escape Plan (not a favorite, but appreciate their intensity). Had to go by myself because no one I know in town appreciates this stuff. Whatever. It rocked.

Winter is finally here after a pleasantly warm thanksgiving. I'm glad for the change of seasons. Goodbye leaves and welcome sleeping skeletons. I need to forget a lot of summer and fall right now.

The morning coffee is extra good today.
Some great quotes from the intro psychiatry book I'm reading for an exam tomorrow. Poetry can capture the truth of a phenomenon so much more clearly than lists of diagnostic criteria sometimes.
From the Anxiety chapter:
I stood stunned, my hair rose, the voice stuck in my throat.
-Virgil
From the Psychotic Disorders:
I felt a Cleaving in my Mind-
As if my Brain had split-
I tried to match it-Seam by Seam-
But could not make them fit.
-Emily Dickinson
The Mood Disorders:
I see the lost are like this, and their curse
To be, as I am mine, their sweating selves. But worse.
-Gerald Manley Hopkins
Sleep Disorders:
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep...
-Robert Frost

Big tests coming up this week, and already in a major study slump. Just not motivated to memorize mountains of crap at this point. Literally, crap - motility in the gut, and rectosphincteric reflexes. Oh well, I'm sure things will end up going ok.
My solution this evening was to ask myself, "what would the Big Lebowski do? - make a White Russian. And so I did. And read some amazing black metal baked goods recipes someone posted over in the Metal group.
After this week I will be climbing and surfing and doing house demolition projects and playing with dogs and hanging out with family, and listening to tons of new music. And drinking more White Russians - just have to keep reminding myself of that.

So, I've wanted a tattoo for a while, and of course the difficult part is always deciding what art to get. Thinking of going with something based off of these ancient rock pictographs:

Saw these guys earlier in the year at Hueco Tanks in TX, mecca for bouldering and longtime oasis for native tribes crossing through the desert. It's still a spiritual place for the Mescalero Apache and other tribes. It's an amazing spot - serene, clean like only the desert can be, surprisingly alive with plants and wildlife in the middle of a desolate countryside. I felt a sense of freedom there that I rarely feel, and would like to commemorate that in ink.

Saw these a while back and found them really striking... imagine coming across them on a cold and foggy evening whilst wandering through the woods. I imagine this is where naked wood nymphs come together with lustful satyrs for nights of pleasure, fucking like the animals and the gods...
The weather has been so nice lately, I've been out of doors a lot, barefoot and enjoying the sun and the smell of spring, and having thoughts like these
