~How To Treat A Severed Limb~
*Locate any individual bleeding arteries on your stump (they will squirt blood with each heart pulse) Pinch off the the large/bleeding the most and get anyone to keep pinching others.....
*Apply Tourniquet....Tight enough to stop bleeding. (pretty tight)
If unable to get to hospital:
*Tie off ends of arteries with a needle and thread/ dental floss / preferably fishing line/ something strong....
*Clean stump thorougly, get out all debris...
*Loosen tourniquet and tie off remaining arteries and vessels...
*Dress your stump with anything anti-bacterial and tightly cover the end of your stump with clean cloth/gauze. The tighter the dressing, the less chance of sustained bleeding...
*Elevate your stump end as high as possible to slow further bleeding....
*Put ice over dressing
*Be prepared to apply a tourniquet again in case of heavy bleeding...
*Treat the pain, the shock and the blood loss...
~How To Preserve the Severed Limb~
*Gently wash severed limb with water
*Wrap the limb in a moist, clean cloth
*Wrap the limb again in watertight material (plastic bag...)
*Keep limb COLD but DO NOT FREEZE, freezing will destroy tissue, keep it in the fridge, or a cooler full of ice.
A limb saved this way will remain viable for reattachment up to 6 hours.
and never submerge your stump in water
