Saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes last night and bloody loved it. I'm a big Apes fan anyway but this one was just stupendous and possibly the best since the '68 original. A terrific script, fantastic acting (especially Andy Serkis and Toby Kebbell), incredible FX and restrained and creative direction. From the film's opening shot to its final shot I was riveted. This is an intelligent, exciting, atmospheric, thought provoking and moving film and a prime example of how you do blockbuster film making well. Just because the budget is huge and there is spectacle doesn't mean a movie has to be dumb, lazy, lowest common denominator rubbish. So take a bow Matt Reeves, the already splendid director of Cloverfield and Let Me In. You knocked it outta the park.
Hail Caesar!
