Did a sendoff for the 556 today as they finished handing the TMC over to us. Never got to work with any of them (I somehow got skipped in shadowing and just got my own room from day one. Maybe confidence? Hopefully not just negligence..
Last night had a fun rocket attack, actually got to hear our retaliation and again today firing off big ass rounds and miniguns.
So far I am beyond thrilled to be here. The constant threat of not going was getting overwhelming.
In AIT(Medic School) I was told Nov11 I was going to Afghanistan. I was excited.
Got home, first drill was NTC(Fort Irwin CA in the Mojave!) at end of training we were told no more Nov deployment.
Got home, terribly upset at losing deployment. Went to Ft Drum for Advanced Medic training and was told we're going to Kuwait! Alright! Back to deploying!
Got to Camp Shelby MISS and was told deployment cancelled again, during mobilization. Our commander fought and finally, weeks before the final send date, we got our Afghanistan mission.
But wait! I find out that I am simply "Back-fill" which means TWO people need to get injured or not deploy for me to get to go. They waited 2 months into mobilization to tell me this.
Fortunately(for me) we had two people not deploy for varying reasons.
So here I am, 2 weeks into my deployment in Kandahar Afghanistan. I look forward to home, of course because being in Shelby for 2 months prior to deploying was terrible enough but I also look forward to the journey ahead. I love treating patients and knowing that every day I go in, I make 4-5 people feel better.
