Just to give you some advice on attending UK meets. Basically, they are generally organised through the group SGUK. SGUK is a private group. You apply, and then you need 2 vouches to get in (basically, an existing member of SGUK says you're ok = 1 vouch). In order to be vouched for, you have to be on the members friends list.
The best way to get to know people on the site is just to interact generally. Comment on the boards, if someone seems interesting, comment in their journal. Just basically get to know people and enjoy your time here. The vast majority of people are really friendly
