Does it seem to anyone else that sloth is becoming socially acceptable? "I'm lazy" and "I'm hungover" and "I just didn't feel like it" seem to be commonplace excuses for not doing things, and people seem to be getting more and more accepting of it.
"Why didn't you call me back?" "I'm sorry dude, I'm terrible about calling people."
"Didn't you get my voice mail?" "I don't check my voice mail."
Look, I can imagine that if you just got off a 45-hour workday got stuck in traffic and had to stop for dinner 'cause there's nothing in the house, I could imagine where checking your e-mail may not be your first priority. But if you're complaining it's hot and don't want to turn on the fan because you're self-admittedly too lazy to do so; I think in addition to the thermostat adjustment you need a swift kick in the rear.
Admitting you're shallow does not make you deep. Saying "I realize I'm a jerk" does not make you endearing, and offering up being lazy as an excuse is just shooting yourself in the foot.
