I busted my ass this week and got a lot of stuff done. Am exhausted and still have friday ahead of me, but feel very good about what I have managed to finish.

Otherwise, little news. I sleep, eat, and work. Ugh. Need a change.

Last weekend, saturday, 3:30 am.

I'm bored.

Solution? Visit friends. That means drive to san francisco. It's 3:30 am. By 3:45 I'm on the road with a 1 litre of coke and a set of mapquest directions to "San Francisco, CA".

Southern Oregon, Northern California? Gorgeous. Sweeping hills and valleys, Elevation, Green.

California valley? Boring - however, not as bad as Ohio.

Decided half way...

Work is fun, been putting in too many hours. But, the move has been not so bad.

Really missing friends from back east.

Got sick. Ate vitamins and slept lots. Basically started treating myself with the style of a race horse trainer.

Started running again; also need to rebuild my upper body muscles. So much to do.

Also need to make sure sqook doesnt work...

And then you'd end up with a replication infrastructure. Something that would keep multiple copy of important meta-date properly distributed in the cluster.

You can't have an app server without duplication of some metadata. Even if it's only {input} and {output} of modules to enable replayability of a transaction in the event of a failure.

You need to have a mechanism to handle failure of an individual step and failure of a transaction controller.

I.e.:

The server who'd been asked to provide a banner ad does not reply. The controller proceeds to ask a second server and then takes step to remediate the first servers' problem.

But then if the controller fails, everything must be either rolled back to the initial request or another controller must seemlessly take over and continue with the transaction.
saruman:
File locking does not. You end up with either a small cluster of peers or a lock server. In either case, the latency around obtaining a lock becomes a significant factor.

Myrinet and InfiniBand can sort of solve that however.

Ugh, number theory exam at 8am tomorrow. Its late, just getting to bed. Back of throat hurts, barely awake, ate poorly today. I think I've mixed myself a brimming pot of self-destruction.

Plan for tomorrow:
breakfast.
exam.
eat a big bowl of beef stew.
nap.
haircut.
nap.
sleep.
dinner.
catatonic slumber until weekend.

well there's not a lot good you can say about my dad, but one thing is he did read to us- my younger sister and I- when we were kids. He read us the narnia stories, the Oz books, all of Heinlein's boyscout type era, and The hobbit. He also started out on the Fellowship, but I don't think we ever got much past rivendell. I went on to become a voracious reader of sci-fi and fantasy, though my sister never got into much outside of C.S.Lewis as an adult.

I went to my first science fiction convention with my dad when I was twelve or so. I think it was the worldcon in boston. It was awesome. It was very important to me as a kid to see positive freaky/geeky role models.

I read LOTR the first time through on my own at about that time. I didn't try the silmarillion until my twenties when I had stronger linguistic tendancies.

My apreciation of Tolkein has only grown the more interested in language and linguistics I've become.

Sound like you're getting a cold.

Spent the whole day at my favourite coffee shop coding uninterrupted. I love weekends and coffee. wink

On a different note, opendarwin can suck my balls for requiring a VESA 2.0 video card - I can't install it in vmware. *grumble*

In other news, I've come to the conclusion that while the linux kernel is effective, its not well designed and, often, rather painful to grok....

For all who asked, Sqook is Faded. Been hitting a different coffee shop in town of late - really enjoying the regulars there (becoming one myself). Got into a great argument about the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Life's looking up. Spring break soon, no plans, I think I may just sleep through the whole thing.

I'm a big fan of learning. I have a restless mind. and a lot of interests.

however, I am not the next olivia. I'm not a programmer at all.

I've had a really slow learning curve with linux. I i'm really interested in operating systems. Since I'm totally self taught, this takes a lot of time. I love to play with computers. hell, I put together the one i'm using now.

what next? that's hard. Aside from beating my last kbounce score, I didn't have anything in mind beyond getting Yellow Dog Linux to go online.

a good next might be just learning more about linux. I have massive holes in my getting it.

Hrmm. Classes are boring. I'm bored. I only have my code and sqook to keep me company. Thank the high heavens for sqook.
