The Art of Owning It!
-by Bodlar Deathbringer
A few years ago I spent 6 months in New York City to just kind of check out the city. I ended up doing some contract work for Moody's in the new World Trade Center 7 building. Building 7 was the one that went down after the others and it was kind of off to the side. Since it was on a different foundation it was the first WTC building to go back up. It was a really interesting place to work. We would go up to the cafeteria on the 19th floor and look out over ground zero. They were still working on the foundation at the time and hadn't really started building much yet. You simply just cannot appreciate the scope of the place without actually being there. Ultimately I decided NYC wasn't the place I wanted to live, but my time there was fucking rad!
In any case, I stayed with a long time good friend of mine while I was there. We have been friends since Junior High and he is the type of friend that no matter when or where we meet we always connect. Kindred spirits is the best way to describe us. We would play games together, drink wine, and bullshit about life with most of our time together. One of the subjects that really struck a chord with me was the idea of "Owning It." Somehow we got on the subject of handling yourself and really being who you are. True to the core. The best example we came up with was Snoop Dogg. That guy can light up a joint almost anywhere and rather than getting into trouble people just kind of shrug it off and go "Oh Snoop, you crazy." The reason he can get away with shit like that is that he is so incredibly secure in who he is that people have no option other than to just accept him.
I've been trying to integrate this idea to my own Modus operandi since then. I have always been a pretty off the wall person. I have an alternative appearance and some very far out approaches to life and the universe. Navigating social circles was frequently awkward and even sometimes difficult for me. This is no longer the case.
I am motherfucking Bodlar Deathbringer and you have no choice but to accept that. I have a big mohawk, tattoos, piercings, and I dress in a way most people would consider very weird. I love the way I look and my appearance isn't for you. It's for me. I'm an artist, rogue scholar, techno-wizard, and all-around fucking badass.
Ever since completely grounding myself in who I am it seems like the world is a different place. When I go out I don't face adversity like I used to. People love my hair and my look. Old people, children, you name it, will come up to me and tell me how much they love the hawk. I Own It 100% and leave absolutely no other option out there. I force people to accept me on my terms and this actually works. The catch here is that if there is even the slightest crack in your armor or presentation then it falls apart. Things come tumbling down and people will grab onto any minor hesitation or lack of confidence.
This is something that takes a lot of time and effort to get to. Start small by working to eliminate those demons you have. Embrace the things that make you awesome and you. Discard the negative personal thoughts. Build a personal emotional foundation to start building your Own It tower with. Eventually you will be so secure and stable in you that you will Own It 100%. People will let you be you and you will no longer have to bend to others or society.
Fuck Yeah! Own it!
Cheers

I've been gone before and it's really not like that at all. There is a lot more to the situation.
