This holiday just came to my attention today, but this Saturday Aug 28th, is Read Comics In Public Day! Its a day for comic lovers to come out of the longbox and let their fanboy/girl flag fly. Lets get out there in the parks, the libraries, the trains, the bars, the coffee shops, everywhere; and read our comics with pride!
The originator of RCIPD, Brian Heater describes it thus:
The concept is fairly simple: were asking that everyone take an hour or two out of their day on August 28th (also the birthday of Jack King Kirby, incidentally) to read a comic book in a public settinga park bench, a beach, a bus, the front steps of your local library (we do ask, however, that you be mindful of local loitering laws). Let strangers see you reading a piece of sequential art.
Take to the streets. Be proud. If someone asks what youre reading, say, a comic book (the phrase graphic novel is also acceptable, but lets face it, it sort of defeats the whole purpose). Heck, lend them a book, if youve got an extrawhat better way to make a new friend and convert a new reader?
I will try to join you, but I will be spending Saturday at the zoo with the family, and I doubt my fiancee would like it if I whipped out the Dark Phoenix Saga in the primate house. But before and after that, believe you me, Ill be a-reading.
