I didn't know what to say about this at the time, and I still have no idea.
The other day I was lecturing to my Analysis students, and this girl sitting in the corner of the front row blurts out, "I love your mouth!"
How does one respond to that? Is it flattering? Is it scary? Is this girl maybe just a weirdo? She seemed embarrassed. I'll bet I did, too. I ground to a halt, flustered for a second, and counter-blurted, "I don't know how to respond to that. Thank you?" while staring at the board, desperately trying to re-stoke the boiler fire in my train of thought's locomotive. I never ever thought I'd say this, but I kind of wish she'd just liked my lecture.
ADDENDUM (9/22/06): I made a 16 year old boy cry today.

at least for a few hours we were the coolest parents in michael's eye for having taken him to see you guys! he (as were we) was thoroughly impressed with the performance!
