"Robyn Hitchcock's surreal sense of lyric was perfectly balanced against Kimbereley Rew's razor-sharp guitar, which had tendencies to explode in violent shards. Matthew Seligman and Morris Windsor formed the solidest of backbones, a phlegmatic rhythm section whose unshakeable groove served only to accentuate Hitchock and Rew's lunacies. The Soft Boys built up to Underwater Moonlight, one of those rare impeccable albums, to the typical critical acclaim and popular neglect. Not long after, The Soft Boys split."

I can never quite understand why this band ( and album) remains unheard of to many of the younger set--but this is the real deal in a world full of super-sized MCCRAPMEALs of pop. The Soft boys, along with a handful of other bands gave kids a reason to buy a record again. So lets hear the love for Robyn and the gang....and get rid of all these starfucker threads about hack bands that could never hold their own without Protools and large amounts of cash. This shows anyone what a little heart, a crappy 4-track and an intellect can do with the right amount of starvation and electricity-Thoughts?

I LOVE the Soft Boys. "Insanely Jealous" is one of the best angsty songs ever.

I got more into the later Robyn stuff, namely Element of Light and I Often Dream of Trains, and there's another recent appreciation station thread about him somewhere around here.

I like a bunch of the older stuff as well....but I still find the Soft Boys to be the total packacke of post-punk and pop. My dream concert would be: Gang of Four, Soft Boys, Wire, Suicide, Pere Ubu. and Mission of Burma. It still baffles me how many of the younger set have never even heard of many of the best bands...

Alan Vega rocks my socks...

A young Thurston Moore got physically assaulted by him during a Suicide show...
I wish I had the chance to experience one. I heard he used to snatch peoples drinks from out of their hands and smash them on the ground... lol

I like the Soft Boys as much as any of his later work!.

Sometimes the goofy quality gets to be a bit much, for me. But it's still great rock and roll! smile

And I second the agreement on the concert, Coldenginelogix. But you should totally throw the Fall in there... biggrin

The Soft Boys would be totally out of place at that concert.

I agree-the Fall should be thrown in there.....and the Soft Boys would not be out of place at that show....gotta have some twisted pop in between the bang.....

Seriously... the Soft Boys would fit for their lyrical bizarreness alone.

If by "sue you if it doesn't work" you mean "have an unfortunately exploded head" then yes.
