You know how the stereotype is old people sitting around listening to the music they got into in their younger years? Well I just had this absurd thought about myself playing to Jedi Mind Tricks at full blast while my grandchildren play on the carpet listening to, "Hologram burn Churches, murders by sticken a crucifix through yer CERVIX!" and I'm all, "yeah those were the good old days when music had values." Each generation has to get progressively more risque in order to grab the youth market what they'll have to do after us is gonna be nuts.

I was just talking with someone about the exact same subject the other day. I though, "Jeez, what could possibly be more offensive then Eminem." Then I found Peaches. She goes way beyond anything he's said. It's mostly tongue in cheek and fun, but it's not that often you hear a song about the merits of pegging.
I can't even begin to imagine what it would take to top that.

What you didn't account for is that as you get older you generally get a little smarter. Anyone above a 90 IQ would be listening to juvenile garbage like that to begin with.

I look forward to telling kids about Snoop. A true hero for our times.

Really, though, the music I listen to now is not what I listened to as a kid, or in college, or right after college. etc. Either I'm discovering new things, or discovering new things about old things, or realizing that the old things have lost any effect they used to have.

One thing I fear, though, is how unwieldy my record collection is going to be when I'm old. I know, or at least hope, that the rate at which I buy new things will plateau at some point. Hopefuly before I turn into a crazy old man living in the desert in a house made of records.

souljacker: man I don't know what I wrote to deserve that flagrant ad hominem man. you know the current events board has a lot of topics that people take a lot more seriously, you might have better luck venting your anger over there.

This is something I've been thinking about for a while now: when I have kids, what will my kids think of my music? How much farther will counterculture go to interest the youth that comes after me?

Not only that, but as a fan of heavy music, every once in a while I wonder, how much more aggressive/abrasive/dissonant will heavy music get in the future? We've had bands like Pantera tour their asses off and barge their way into high platinum record sales without the help of radio, thus leaving the industry with little choice but to adapt to the changing times and give some space to legions of metal fans. If a band as heavy as Pantera can build the empire they have/had, then what's to come after that? How heavy can this get? What's next? Death metal? As far as I know, and I might be wrong, most death metal fans would want to keep things underground and to themselves and the idea of their music being brought to the masses doesn't seem like their idea of a good time.

Then again, it would also be interesting if our childrens music did nothing to shock us at all, b/c we've already been there and done that. It reminds me of something Henry Rollins said on a spoken word album about our kids coming home with really weak music that they thought was "edgy" and we're all like "What the hell? That is so lame! You wanna the real stuff? Here, this band is called Slayer. Now that's what I'm talkin' about you little wimp!"

Woe to the rebellious ones we will be raising, they've got quite the uphill battle. biggrin
