Is there anyone else out there that likes bands such as:

Aksak Maboul
Cassiber
Bob Drake
5uu's
Thinking Plague
Henry Cow
Univers Zero
Volapuk
Alamaailman Vasarat
Debile Menthol
Lars Hollmer
Hail
Hamster Theatre
Some Fred Frith, like the album Gravity

And I guess some others like the Residents, Zappa, Mr. Bungle classify too. So if you like them, you should check out some of the others I listed above.

My favorite labels are Recommended Records and Cuneiform

Reveal yourselves! Even if you, such as me, aren't crazy about much under the prog rock banner, or at least what most people think of when they hear the word "prog"...

ps edit RIO stands for Rock in Opposition

I'm not going to lie, I found it afterwards when I Wiki'd RIO.

Seems like a pretty silly genre label to me, though. What happened to good ol' avant-garde? Why create that trainwreck of a name?

Also,

(at least, from what i've noticed on the boards)

are you comment stalking me?

I didn't do it!
Though, it is more specific than just "avant-garde"... it's more of a group of people and sphere of influence than a sound.

Probably because 'avant garde' was a trainwreck at the time, and they didn't want to be lumped in with the UK improv scene that had very different ideas trading under the 'avant garde' name. Plus, they needed a catchy sloganistic name for their movement.

It's interesting stuff, but some of it has really not held up over time.
