Reverend Ted Haggard, one of the nation's most powerful evangelical leaders and outspoken opponent of gay marriage yesterday admitted to buying meth from a male prostitute who is claiming that he and the pastor have been having drug fueled gay sex liaisons for the last 3 years.
Welcome to a massive shit storm for the religious right... this is about to get really good...
Thursday Haggard stepped down as the president of the 30 million member National Association of Evangelicals and today left his post as leader of Colorado's giant 14,000 member New Life Church amid the allegations. Haggard has such influence in Washington that he claims that he and George Bush have weekly telephone conversations.
Male prostitute Mike Jones, 49, claimed in a radio interview that he and the pastor have been sexually involved for years, and that he decided to go public to combat Haggard's hypocritical stance on same-sex marriage:
"It made me angry that here's someone preaching about gay marriage and going behind the scenes having gay sex," he said.
"I just want people to step back and take a look and say, 'Look, we're all sinners, we all have faults, but if two people want to get married, just let them, and let them have a happy life,'" said Jones
Haggard, at this point has only admitted to buying but not taking Meth and receiving a sex-free massage from Jones, while on a business trip.
Here's a clip from The God Delusion Author Richard Dawkins' film The Root of All Evil where he profiled Ted Haggard and his New Life Church. It all gets pretty exciting by the end, when Hawkins' film crew is kicked out of the compound for offending Haggard's delicate sensibilities.
i wish somehow he could get the death penalty. what a piece of shit. death penalty for hyppocricy, appearing to be made of pure solid evil and just being plain hideous.
It's a shame he hasn't got the balls to stay instead of quitting. (Though I'd be sorry to hear he'd been killed by one of his own congregation.) I'd like him to deliver a sermon explaining to his flock that he'd been wrong all along...

Thats just utterly ridiculous. As much as this guys sucks is this much hatred really necessary?
"At the time, Haggard said that he believed marriage is a union between a man and woman rooted in centuries of tradition, and that research shows it's the best family unit for children"
Rooted in centuries of tradition? You mean, like spousal abuse?
I wonder how his five kids feel now that they know their father is not only having [gasp!] gay sex, but also doing meth. Sounds like a great family unit.
Just think how much better they would feel about it if he didn't tell them that gay people were the scum of the earth and are going to burn in hell for all of eternity.
New slogan for courting evangelicals into the democratic party: Like the Republicans, many of us are gay. Unlike the Republicans, we are honest about it. Compromise--save yourself the embarrassment and vote for a straight democrat.
Okay, it's not a slogan. But I'm not a gifted writer.
The way these scandals continue to unfold, Santorum, Dobson, and Musgraves must be gayer than gay. We'll all be better off when they figure it out.
Oh, and I love Haggard's advice at the end: Don't be arrogant. Thank you, Stephen Colbert, for teaching me about irony.

He's now admitting to taking the meth, but not the gay sex. So...doing meth is morally better than gay sex?
The bible doesn't say a thing about meth.
It was on the third tablet, you know--the one Moses dropped. It's still pretty important to god that you're not on meth. All I'm on at the moment is nyquil, and that shit has fucked me right up (lightweight).
