"Quicksilver", by Neal Stephenson:
An odd book. I'm on page 650 (of 900), and I still don't know what it's about. Maybe it's not about anything. Or maybe it'll all come together in the last 250 pages.
Still worth reading, just for the dialog and the word etymologies. (There's also some entomology.) Stephenson should write plays or screenplays (as well as novels).
Side note: you'll miss a lot of the "in" jokes and references if you don't read "Cryptonomicon" first.
