I like old musicals... "Camelot", "West Side Story"... stuff like that. Even "Paint Your Wagon", Clint Eastwood's first and (to the best of my knowledge) only singing role. I recently discovered that a lot of old stuff is available here and there on the 'net... I'd just never looked before.

So I found some old tracks from "Camelot". But... something was wrong! This isn't how...

Armageddon... another '80s classic rock reference via Gnutella, or the current state of my dissertation? Only the Dean of Grad Studies knows for sure... blackeyed eeek

"There was a full moon over Memphis..."
beledi:
How is that pesky thing going anyway? The dissertation, not the armageddon.
adelina:
Wish I lived in Memphis... skull

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.
beledi:
I agree.

And yes, the fishiness seems like a good blanket comment.

That plane in NY thing was crazy. We were watching the CNN live coverage of it, and it was ridiculous. Perhaps that's just because the reporting doesn't translate as well as one would hope into closed captioning...we got to read it as we were in a pub while it was on TV. It made the reporters sound, well, less smart than they hope they come off I imagine.
adelina:
Hot, sexy, tattooed salmon? Now that is a funny thing to visualize!

Watching and reading about current events is the most depressing thing ever.

"Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;" I think I know what this part of the riddle is about. It's a donut.

There's something fishy about that...
beledi:
Fishy about what?

Apparently Delirium used a lot of their performance songs, so we were really fortunate. It was amazing!

Most people have probably heard about the new anti-terror legislation in the States, whereby anybody, anywhere, can be declared an "enemy combatant", then be held indefinitely without trial, tortured, etc.

I finally figured out the US government's agenda here. You'll recall that they're fond of saying that the terrorists "... hate us because of our freedom."

Their solution is now clear. Simply eliminate all freedoms...

I know what you mean about distractions - apparently most things have the ability to distract me and set me off on a completely-unrelated, not even remotely tangential thought leaving me wondering where I was in the first place. But SG is a *good* distraction, or isn't it? kiss biggrin wink love

I just found a dead fruit fly in my drink. Well, at least he died happy.

beledi:
Yes, I think he must have died happy. Mmm...rye and ginger.

So...now what? I bet you hate that question...

I'd love to see some photos. I think you have my email address?
beledi:
I'm sure you can finish it in the time limit. I know a very successful curator of life sciences that finished his PhD thesis in 8 weeks. smile

Did you get your fanny pack on sale at the Gap?

You'd think that the students would identify more strongly with the material, but it seems to be an uphill battle sometimes. One would hope they'd identify with the penis or the clitoris. It was pretty funny how many people asked what the clitoris was for, so we had to come up with an official sounding 'purpose'...

The pictures were great. Thanks for sending them. Your friend is in amazing shape.

A whole lot of my favourite songs are on the 80 Worst Songs of the 80's list. biggrin

So... I finally bought one of these trendy IPod things. I like it.

Ever since I bought it, though, I've started thinking about how many people have them (or some similar portable music device). Now I spend all my bus trips wondering what all the people around me are listening to! It's not quite driving me nuts, but it's on my mind a lot. So......

Ah, the thesis. I won't have to worry about that for about 15 months. Then all hell will break loose wink

I listen to a variety of things. My PMD has some classical, some jazz, some really catchy pop stuff (which I loathe but sometimes enjoy, guiltily), some rock, some metal-y satire stuff, and plenty of good techno-ish beats. Plus Serena Ryder and Hawksley Workman, always. smile

Why is it that so many things I think are funny turn out not to be funny to anybody else, while things that everybody (except me) is laughing at leave me wondering, "is that funny? Why is that funny?"

I'm starting to think I'm an outlier.

Okay, I'm lying about that. I'm damn certain I'm an outlier.

Though I'm still fuzzy as to why. Maybe...

Good heavens. I almost posted a pro-animal-testing comment to an anti-animal-testing thread. Whew... close call! If I'd actually hit "submit" instead of closing the page, I'd be a blackened lump of charcoal by now. A narrow escape.

I don't like cruelty to animals. I hate causing pain to living things (excepting only mosquitos and rats... I'm happy to make them suffer). No, really. Nor do...

I'll keep that in mind.
I will never forgive myself for not being in a better financial position when I went to Scotland. I got the plane ticket as a gift, but had to pay for everything else with plasic. I'm still technically paying off the drunks I had there, five years later.
mrstitches:
That's why you shouldn't get drunk off of the good stuff. Aside from the fact that after a few glasses good scotch is pretty much indistinguishable from blended.

We found a few bunches of really nice flowers in June when we were backpacking along the Strait this year - I wish I had them digitally. They looked like Indian paintbrush, though I don't think that's what they were. Whatever the case, they were beautiful and contrasted SO nicely against the huge dark rocks we were clambering across.

I think I need to do some scanning at work before I'm done my job. So many photos that need to be digitally captured. smile
beledi:
I'll likely post some of them - but only the ones that I feel are 'good enough' wink
