Later that night.....
In all reality, I love the cold weather. My only only gripe with cold weather is the fuckin inconvenience is lays upon my life. We finally get hit with a reasonable amount of snow and it shut everything down. We're not used to this anymore...it's becoming few and far between. Five more years and we'll have south Carolina weather. Gotta love it.
Transit train and a subway ride and we arrived at the world famous Apollo theater. First time and I liked it. Smaller then my expections yes, but nevertheless you felt the life and experience of the place. We got there late so we missed the intro for them and the roots always make a grand entrance.
Lower Mezzanine now, hop skip and jump down and we land in our seats. even in a mezzanine we were still right there. The only problem, the rood was too lower...with a descending slope angle. So it was like seeing a concert in letterbox, ?Love's head was cut off half the time. Regardless, they have continued to jam more so then ever. The went into a medley of everything from souther rap(this is why I'm hot)*, 80's classics(plant rock, salt n pepa, biz markie,) 90's (wu tang, O.D.B.,a tribe called quest).
They ended and greeted the crowd, introduced themselves, announced how crazy it was for them to play the Apollo and they asked the crowd to boo them because " they wanted to get booed at on that stage" Otherwise it was the full effect. Captain Kirk, ?Love, and Tuba Godding Jr. stayed on and wanted to play a song that they've recently started playing it live. A cover of Bob Dylan's "Masters of war" which didn't sound like the original but played it their way and rocked it. During Captain Kirk's 5 min guitar solo he lead into " Machine Gun" which made my head explode because I never thought I would have seen that played live by anyone.
?Love's playing as he played with Kirk was solid and on point, his influences permeated through his playing as you can hear Max Roach -like drum rolls and fills. Soon after he went into his own Moby Dick drum solo. Middle of his hands becoming flowing blurs a stick flies up and away, caught the beat with on drumstick and proceeded to pull out a drumstick from his goddamn afro. He looked like a samurai that would have been in an akira Kurosawa's samurai movie. kept the solo for another 3 mins and came back to finish masters of war right where they left off. Just fucking great....they were truly playing up there and thats all I care about seeing the music come to life.
The set was wrapped up alil before one...I did feel cheated...certain songs seemed rush and it was over before it ended. I saw them in Roseland back in 05 for about 2 hrs...things change.
The streets weren't wind tunnels of burning sandpaper and the rain held up. Martin Luther King blvd looked/felt like home...crazy. Local subway and transit train back back in good old Elizabeth. When you stay its busy and crazy, coming home from the city and late night, there's a world of difference, way beyond a body of water status. Again picture of this all to come...my mind just switched the channel so that train of thought has derailed.
I hope this weekend is not chock full of adventures...i need to become a hermit and cease to speak for longer then just a few hours sleep movies and photography sound like my plan...
Stay Cool
* I do not condone The Roots playing mtv southern rap and I was quite shocked when they did. Their version was good but nevertheless I don't want to see that.
